Ever wondered about the DNA of a festival goer? Self-service ticketing platform and events marketplace Eventbrite did — and they've shared their findings with us.

The study into festival social buzz found that music festival fans are the loudest, driving over half of all the conversations that happened around festivals. When looking at volume of social buzz, Soundwave came out on top as Australia’s most popular festival, followed by Stereosonic and Vivid Sydney.

However, when you look at the amount of buzz per festival compared to attendee numbers, it shows that Splendour in the Grass actually has the most passionate fans, followed by Stereosonic and Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Festivals aren’t just for the youth. While the average festival goer is twenty-something and female, 68% are married, a quarter are thirty-something and over a third have children.

They generally have a keen interest in politics and news (48%), comedy (21%), music (20%) and technology (17%), and their favourite brands include McDonalds, Instagram and QANTAS.

Festival attendees are also addicted to social media, especially Twitter. In fact, the majority of festival attendees have been active on the Twitter for more than three years, have over 100 followers and tweet at least once a day, most likely from their iPhone.

Pearl Jam, Dannii Minogue, Hugh Jackman and Matt Preston were the people that got us talking about festivals. Pearl Jam sharing their set list at Big Day Out and Dannii Minogue’s tweets about the Stereosonic line-up got music fans around the country buzzing, while fashion fans were hanging of Dannii Minogue’s every tweet at Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Hugh Jackman got people talking about Tropfest when he tweeted on the night of the finale, saying that he wished he could be there. Meanwhile Matt Preston caused a stir at Melbourne Food and Wine Festival when he started chatting with some of his chef friends that were attending.
