Flickerfest Brings Thrilling Short Films To The Gold Coast

Flickerfest 2015
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

One of the world's most prominent short film festivals Flickerfest will be presenting its 'Short Films Licensed To Thrill!' to the Arts Centre Gold Coast later this March.

Running for 24 years, Flickerfest is Academy Accredited and BAFTA-recognised, making it one of the best short film festivals in the world. Having completed a successful run in Brisbane in February, Gold Coast film buffs will have the chance to view some of the hottest short films from around the country. After a successful run last year, Flickerfest returns to the Gold Coast for the third time and will screen a range of Australian shorts handpicked from the festival competition. Australia’s largest touring film festival, Flickerfest visits 50 locations around the country and is proudly supported in Gold Coast by touring partners Screen Queensland and Screen Australia.

Gold Coast punters will be treated to films such as 'Bush Mechanics', which won the Yoram Gross Award for Best Australian Short Animation. The film tells the story of four young Warlpiri men on a journey to visit a powerful elder living at a remote outstation. As they drive across the red dirt roads of the central Australian desert they must overcome mechanical mishaps and the trickery of a mischievous Munga Munga spirit. The group must use their bush ingenuity to keep the car running and themselves alive.

'Florence Has Left The Building' will also be screening and takes place at the annual Christmas Eve concert at the Marigold House Assisted Living Facility. Starring an unrecognisable Jacki Weaver, the film is about an elderly lady named Florence wanting out of the facility as all her friends are dying. When the staff double books two rival Elvis impersonators, Florence takes the opportunity for one last hurrah.

Florence Has Left The BuildWinner of the Virgin Australia Award for Best Australian Short Film, 'Grey Bull' focuses on Martin, a South Sudanese refugee who happens upon a bull who he believes is his spiritual totem. Deciding to rescue it from the abattoir he works in, Martin is torn between his ancient cultural identity and his family’s new life in Australia.

Flickerfest screens on 27 March at Arts Centre Gold Coast.
