Woody's Music Closes Its Iconic Woodridge Store

Woody's Music, Woodridge © Howard Duggan
Founder and Publisher. Based in Brisbane.
Howard started Scene Magazine in 1993. Paul Keating was Prime Minister. Whitney, Janet and Mariah all had Aussie #1s and Mark Zuckerberg was 9. Over 30 years he's overseen the growth of scenestr magazine to become Australia's largest – and only national – street press while forging a digital-first imperative for the title in the mid-naughties. He's judged more battle of the bands than he cares to remember and proud of the myriad media partnerships the company has earned across the music, arts and comedy sectors. He likes Star Trek and a good Oxford Comma – way too much fun at parties.

Today is the last day of trading for Woody's Music — the last independent record store in Logan City.

At 4:30pm the iconic shop will turn into a pumpkin, marking the end of a significant era for local music lovers and Brisbane's cultural historians. The closure follows the closure of Brookside Music earlier this week.

But while the digital age continues its enforced redefinition of retailing, the music buying public in both catchments won't be left without a real-world cd browsing fix. We reported that Brookside is being taken up by the Sanity retail chain, while Woody's Music will operate an outpost in the Food Court from Monday 30th June.

Woody's has been operating in Logan Central Plaza since 1982 and the current owner/ operator, Gary Beitzel, took over in 1988 and developed a reputation for its large range of pop, reggae, country, urban, metal and punk.

Closing celebrations will include an auction of music and memorabilia, including an array signed Savage Garden items (the band hails from Logan City), which starts at 10am today.
