An array of acts have been added to the 2016 WOMADelaide festival, plus an exclusive Australian show from a UK act.
In an already impressive first line-up of artists that include Grammy Award-winner Angélique Kidjo and Canadian environmentalist and philanthropist Dr David Suzuki, the festival has been bolstered with its second round of acts.
UK's Mercury Prize-nominated and politically charged electronic act, Asian Dub Foundation will make their WOMADelaide debut and Australian exclusive. They have been challenging social justice with their unique sound for over twenty years and are sure to thrill crowds over the festival. Their latest studio album, 'More Signal More Noise' is as relevant now as it was when they started.
"It’s exciting to be able to present such a feisty international act in Asian Dub Foundation on the main stage on the final night of the festival next year," says WOMADelaide Director, Ian Scobie. "They will undoubtedly close the night, and the festival, with the power and energy that their audiences have come to expect."
Other notable inclusions to the festival are: west African-inspired, pop of French-Cuban twin sisters Ibeyi, who are daughters of Buena Vista Social Club percussionist Miguel Anda Diaz; the eight-piece New York ensemble Hazmat Modine, who have their own unique take on 1920s American music; the stunning Isreali-born Ethiopian jazz singer Ester Rada; and after a six-year absence, the indie band Calexico return to WOMADelaide.
Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller has also created an interactive, inflatable, life-sized replica of Stonehenge in the form of 'Sacrilege' that will be on display throughout the festival. It measures 34m in length and 5m high – it's sure to create a lot of fun for attending families.
