TURN UP! 2019 Speakers And Presenters Programme

Michael Chugg will deliver the keynote at 2019 Turn Up! music conference (Sunshine Coast).
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Spread across two jam-packed days – featuring keynote presentations, conversational discussion panels with leading music industry achievers, networking opportunities with industry veterans and fellow practitioners, and local showcase performances – Sunshine Coast's Turn Up! Music Industry Conference has fast become one of Australia’s favourite gatherings of music industry members.

2019 will see the event expand to a two-day programme (17-18 October) at The Playhouse (Solbar) in Maroochydore, with another serving of top-shelf industry talent ready to dispense their knowledge.

This year's keynote will be presented by one of the doyens of Australian music, Michael Chugg. “I'm a great supporter of anything that gets young people more education and more knowledge of the music industry,” Michael told us in an interview earlier this year.

“Especially because people who go to these events are looking to get into the business, so it's really good to be able to steer them in the right direction.”

With past panelists and guests having included Ted Gardner (Tool, Jane's Addiction), Bill Hauritz (Woodford Folk Festival), Glenn Wheatley (John Farnham, Delta Goodrem) and Jeff Chandler (Gympie Music Muster), Turn Up!'s industry credentials are second-to-none.

Adds Program Director, Eloise Gallagher: “The 2019 Turn Up Conference is about bringing Sunshine Coast music people together to interact with, celebrate and be inspired by Australia’s music industry experts.

“We have been building this event over several years and have developed a community of very approachable leaders who want to pass on their wealth of experience to the next generation, in an intimate and welcoming setting.

“In 2019, we bring you an Aussie legend: promoter, manager and record label chief Michael Chugg, who will distil 57 years of music industry experience into an unmissable keynote speech.”

The Thursday programmes includes the keynote address, In Conversation panel and live Q&A with leading music industry achievers. The Friday itinerary features an industry breakfast, two master classes and a showcase gig.

Chugg’s keynote is just one of the great reasons to Turn Up! Returning to the conference to share more in 2019 are 'Roadies' author Stuart Coupe, Toombul Music's Barry Bull, musician and APRA AMCOS rep Kellie Lloyd and Francesca de Valence (I Heart Songwriting Club).

Turn Up!’s key focus is to provide networking opportunities and to showcase emerging Sunshine Coast Musicians.

The 2019 Turn Up! Music Industry Conference takes place at Solbar (Sunshine Coast) 17-18 October.

Speaker Bios

Howard Freeman

Howard Freeman has been working in the music industry for over 50 years. In the 1960s he was launched into his career working for the family business on the door of venues his father ran.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Howard worked as both a tour or production manager for bands such as Sherbet and Dragon, who initially toured Australia and New Zealand venues, and gradually progressed to world tours. From the 1980s, and into the 1990s he toured with numerous artists including INXS, Jimmy Barnes, AC/DC, Eminem, Ice Cube, Midnight Oil, Prince and The Rolling Stones to name a few, and was the Production Manager for Big Day Out for 20 years.

Over the course of his career, Howard spent 45 years on the road, was in charge of production budgets of up to $6.5million and the total patronage of events he managed equated to over 11 million attendees.

Howard is one of Australian live music’s great survivors, an industry veteran who has spent more than 50 years in the game and still attacks his job with vigour. He’s spent time on stage with rock royalty such as Billy Thorpe, Tex Perkins and Nick Cave, but his is probably not a name you know.

Mr Freeman is a roadie, part of the indispensable crew that makes the show happen, setting up smoothly each night and then packing up when it’s over. Most roadies do it because they love it, he says, but it’s a precarious line of work, and he has seen so many “fall by the wayside” since he started working on stage doors in 1965 aged 14.

“It’s a life where you’ve got to push yourself and reinvent yourself and carry your can and dig a hole if you have to, to survive. . . [or] you become a statistic,” he says.

Stuart Coupe

Stuart Coupe will do a mini keynote speech titled Marketing Without Money at the industry breakfast (Friday 18 October from 8:30 am).

Stuart has worked as a journalist, author, editor, manager, record label director, radio presenter, publicist and tour promoter. Career highlights include being the only Australian to interview Bob Dylan twice, working with The Clash, managing Paul Kelly and the Hoodoo Gurus and being awarded a Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement award for his contributions to crime fiction.

Stuart has written, co-written or edited ten books including 'The New Music' (with Glenn A Baker), 'The Promoters', 'Gudinski', 'Tex' and 'Roadies'. He has already started work on a new book about Paul Kelly.

Dr. Bill Anseline

Dr. Bill Anseline, a long-standing, trusted medical practitioner in Queensland, having graduated from Newcastle University in 1991 with Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Medical Science and Bachelor of Medicine degrees.

Today, he practises a number of subspecialties and he has developed exceptional competencies in teaching, training and general practitioner-led primary care research.

Prior to graduating from medical school, Dr. Bill supported himself by working as a bodyguard in the security and entertainment industries. As a result, he forged strong relationships with music, movie and sporting promoters as well as production teams and many of the stars, athletes and entertainment principals who he protected.

Later, having finished his medical training, he brought a value-added 'medico' component to his security work, a unique dynamic that gave new meaning to the traditional 'bodyguard' role. In turn, for the past quarter century, Dr. Bill has routinely provided medical and/ or security services to most major artists, acts or live entertainment events that have toured throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Now teaming with other Event Medicine (EVM) experts worldwide and leading an evolving global EVM physician alliance, he has been the primary steward of a concept of 'global entertainment medicine' for tour promoters and those they support.

Shannon Ward

Shannon Ward has worked in various departments of the entertainment industry for over 20 years. Her career started with Perth Entertainment Centre and production company Concert and Corporate Productions in Perth.

She then moved onto a freelance career where she spent 12 years touring with various Australian festivals like Big Day Out, Soundwave, Good Vibrations and national and international artists like Rolling Stones, Steve Earle, The Offspring, Paul Kelly, Angus & Julia Stone and many others.

Her roles varied from tour and production manager, site manager, promoter rep, lighting designer and operator. This versatility has given her a unique set of skills that has ensured she has always been sort after and employed. With a client focused attitude and with a passion for logistics, she is a successful and respected figure in the entertainment industry.

Francesca de Valence
