Sydney power-pop rockers, Gavin Bowles & The Distractions' latest single, 'Here Comes The Heartache', is a fun, vibrant song to overcome the misery of failed romance.
The group's third release from their forthcoming debut album 'Phoning It In' (out 6 October), competing jangly guitar and an incessant, pounding rhythm section that's hypnotically jarring power 'Here Comes The Heartache' as Bowles' buoyant, infectious vocals float atop the catchy indie rock tones.A beaming guitar riff ripped straight form the '80s then descends, igniting a jet stream of dazzling power-pop that highlights the track that gallops along, before the mid-track breakdown provides the tonal space for the song to come roaring home with a vocal "heartache" call and response melded to the pulsating rhythm.
"'Here Comes The Heartache' was written during the 2021 lockdown in Sydney," shares frontman Gavin. "It was a strange time and I had just left a long-term relationship.
"I wrote the riff and liked the pulse and bounce of it – so I wrote the lyrics to reflect the pangs of anxiety and anguish that come on during such a time, and that idea that it's always lurking around the corner."
Released last month, today scenestr is thrilled to premiere the song's music video that features each band member being 'taken out' by a disillusioned cupid. Enjoy.
"The 'cupid' idea for the film clip was based on the single artwork," adds Gavin. "The scenario of a washed-up, stalker-ish cupid going after the band came up and was just too funny not to do it.
"Cupid is played by our friend Josh (who also made a cameo in our video for 'On The Telephone') and is directed by Tom Roberts (who did our last couple of videos too).
"We had a lot of fun coming up with all the scenes and storyline and then executing it all in the shoot. Those plastic and rubber arrows can hurt a bit when shot with enough force!"
