Order Sixty6 are a hip hop group from the south side of Brisbane featuring rappers Professor Paul, Apollø, S.A.B and melrose..
With a string of singles already to their name – 'You Should Go To Therapy', 'Summertime' and 'Suburbia' (the latter is nominated for the Hip Hop/ Rap award at Queensland Music Awards) – Order Sixty6 self-describe themselves as "a mix between Injury Reserve, Brockhampton and The Wiggles".As you struggle to get that image in (or out of) your head, we have a chat with the lads ahead of their live performance at the Queensland Music Awards next month.
For the uninitiated, who are Order Sixty6?
Apollø: We’re a four-piece boy band from the south side of Brisbane, consisting of myself, Professor Paul, S.A.B and melrose.
Prof P: Back in 2017, I’d have people 'round my house throughout the week to make music and hang out. I used to see the guys individually until one night they all came over and we just freestyled and made some turnt-as Star Wars raps.
What style of hip hop, rap do you create?
Apollø: I guess if you had to draw comparisons, we’d be a mix between Injury Reserve, Brockhampton and The Wiggles.
Your bio labels your sound as ‘music by misfits for misfits’; explain yourselves please?
S.A.B: Despite being from different walks of life between the four of us, as young'uns we all experienced the same exclusion socially for being too passionate about the 'uncool' or 'weird' things in life. We've gradually come to embrace this side of ourselves and I think it finds its way into our music always.
melrose.: Because of this we hope that people who feel the same way can connect to the music we make. There’s a lot of weirdos out there, and we want to meet them all.
Apollø: Our first single was literally called 'Crocs With Socks'. I think that’s enough context to explain how weird we are, haha!
The group is a finalist in the hip hop/ rap category at this year's Queensland Music Awards for your song 'Suburbia'; congrats – you must be stoked with that result?
Prof P: Yeah, we’re totally hyped. To think that we’ve come far enough to have our song recognised on this level is a lil dream come true.
How did you guys celebrate when you heard the news?
Apollø: I was on lunch break when I found out, so I guess you could say I celebrated with half a burger in my mouth.
S.A.B: I was in Las Vegas at the time. It was definitely something I looked forward to coming home to.
melrose.: I was having a relaxing bath at the time and nearly dropped my phone in the water when I heard.
Prof P: I’d just finished my shift at work and my girlfriend sent me the news first; I danced home haha.
Order Sixty6 will also be performing live at Queensland Music Awards; how did that gig came about?
Prof P: We were apart of QUBE Effect last year and got along well with the team who ran it. This one came up out of the blue from one of their producers; super grateful.
Apollø: Shout-out to Janne one time.
Do you plan to add any extra elements to the performance on the night?
Prof P: Mmm, might just keep that a secret. Shhhh hehe!
And when can Brisbane next see you guys performing your own headline shows? Is interstate travel planned this year?
Apollø: The weekend of the awards show we head down to The Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle (8 March) to do our first interstate show, which we’re pretty hyped for.
melrose.: We’re also planning a Brisbane show for the next couple of months, so stay tuned for that.
You released 'Summertime' with I AM D in November; are you working on any more original tracks at the moment? Is there an EP or album in the works?
S.A.B: We have tracks in the bank ready to go. As cliche as it sounds, new music from the Order is coming very soon with and EP later this year as well.
The group’s Facebook profile photo features one of the members wearing a Kodak jacket (of an early 2000s NASCAR team); serious question – the scenestr editor has his eyes on it; is it for sale (if so, name your price)? Let's barter!
Apollø: melrose. can answer that.
S.A.B: Yeah, I think we can arrange something. . . so long as I can get a cut. ;)
melrose.: Woah! Hold on! It’s my jacket! It’s a Jeff Hamilton original from 1997 that I found in a camera shop by accident. It’s my favourite piece of clothing I own, so it isn’t for sale. But if you’re interested in similar pieces, there are a few of his jackets floating around on eBay.
My favourite app at the moment is?
Apollø: Huji is my go-to atm; it’s a film camera app that takes some really dope looking photos.
Prof P: Yeah Huji is lit, I’ve been cranking that too.
To date, our most embarrassing moment together was the time... (finish this sentence)?
Prof P: I started a table-top beat and tried to start a cypher in Cooparoo McDonalds before heading to a gig. melrose. hate’s causing a scene; he was nearly gonna leave before we even got food haha!
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Apollø: Definitely some sort of vegetarian Filipino dish.
S.A.B: I'm cooking y'all some pasta and buying you whatever flavour bubble tea you want.
melrose.: I recently learned how to make pho and I’ve been making it non-stop for weeks.
Prof P: Migoreng from Aldi with a fried egg. I am the migodaddi.
What's the one chore you dislike the most?
Apollø: Cleaning my room and organising my wardrobe. I have way too many clothes.
S.A.B: For me, it'd be taking out the bins on bin day. I always tell myself I'll do it the morning of, then I forget.
melrose.: Dishes for sure.
Prof P: Weed whacking the backyard.
Do you have any phobias... please explain?
Apollø: Thalassophobia, I find the open ocean terrifying.
melrose.: Heights and dental work. That’s why all my dentists have to be shorter than me.
Prof P: Don’t know if it’s a phobia, but I sometimes get a lil paranoid that anyone at anytime could just want to have a go and get into a fight. I don’t really trust anyone when I’m out and about, even nice, old ladies.
