Newtown Social Club Announces Closure

Newtown Social Club
Founder and Publisher. Based in Brisbane.
Howard started Scene Magazine in 1993. Paul Keating was Prime Minister. Whitney, Janet and Mariah all had Aussie #1s and Mark Zuckerberg was 9. Over 30 years he's overseen the growth of scenestr magazine to become Australia's largest – and only national – street press while forging a digital-first imperative for the title in the mid-naughties. He's judged more battle of the bands than he cares to remember and proud of the myriad media partnerships the company has earned across the music, arts and comedy sectors. He likes Star Trek and a good Oxford Comma – way too much fun at parties.

Newtown Social Club has announced it will close permanently next month.

The iconic live music venue in The Sandringham Hotel released a statement confirming its last operational day will be 23 April, 2017. The news comes after turbulent times for the venue in recent years.

In 2012, after being placed into receivership and amid fears the venue would be turned into apartments there was a rally to "save the Sandringham Hotel from the banks clutches" which was publicly supported by Angry Anderson and Tim Freedman to an estimated 3,000 people.

In October of the same year, 'The Sando' was purchased by the owners of popular Melbourne rock venue The Corner Hotel and renamed The Newtown Social Club.

The statement released by the hotel reads:

Dear friends,

Three years since saving the venue from the hands of developers, it is with a heavy heart that Newtown Social Club announces it will be shutting its doors on April 23rd 2017.

Whilst the live music part of the business was a resounding success, the current regulatory climate in Sydney and the inherent challenges therein have made it unsustainable. We look forward to exploring new opportunities in the future.

We’d like to thank our amazing staff, as well all the artists, industry, media and punters that have supported us along the way. We’ve had so many incredible shows and dealt with so many fantastic people over the last few years.

We’ve got an exciting run of shows over the coming months including Methyl Ethel, Camp Cope, Frankie Cosmos, Margaret Glaspy, Cosmo's Midnight, Holly Throsby, Things Of Stone And Wood, Turin Brakes, plus loads more. Head to www.newtownsocialclub.com to grab tickets to our final shows and we hope to see you all over the next few months for a farewell beer.

We're looking forward to going out with a bang.

Much love,
 NSC
