Marcus Scott And The Bo-Keys Bring The Memphis Soul Experience To Blues On Broadbeach

The Bo-Keys will be joined by Marcus Scott at 2023 Blues On Broadbeach.
Nick lives in Singapore where he enjoys amazing food, exotic travel and playing saxophone. In an ideal world, Nick would write about jazz music and nothing else.

Gold Coast, get ready to witness an authentic Memphis soul experience when Marcus Scott and The Bo-Keys arrive next week at Blues On Broadbeach.

The Bo-Keys span generations of Memphis blues and soul and are primed to feature the electrifying vocal presence of Memphis soul man, Marcus Scott.

On his push bike riding around one of Memphis' beautiful parks when this interview was conducted, Marcus is in good shape and looking forward to delivering a blistering performance.

"I love Australia and can't wait to be back down there to perform for you. I first came to Australia with Tower Of Power seven years ago and loved it."

The Bo-Keys are led by Grammy-nominated producer-bassist Scott Bomar, as well as historic session musicians from Stax and Hi Records studio bands; no contemporary band embodies the power of soul more than The Bo-Keys.

"The Bo-Keys are all legends and an amazing band. So much history and such great, great, great players. Playing with them is a real honour.

"It's my first time with the band and already the music is on fire. We've been working hard to prepare some music that is deep in the Memphis tradition. Oh man, these guys have such an incredible musical perspective which has contributed so much to the soul landscape today."

Born and raised in a city that is well known for world-class soul music, Scott is the real deal and the recent lead singer of Tower Of Power.

He absolutely loved collaborating with that great band. "Working with Tower Of Power was incredible. I learned so much with those guys. You know, every instrument has their place in the groove. And they're all just so incredible on their instruments that it was all quite humbling."

As a young boy, Marcus would sit with his ears glued to the radio mimicking every sound he heard. This fascination evolved into an insatiable desire to entertain and capture the hearts of audiences everywhere.

His musical journey started in 2005 as a hit in local Memphis talent shows and quickly became known as the singer for all of the major gigs in Memphis. He's off to Germany for some shows after Australia and can't wait to get back into the studio.

"Yeah man, being able to record at home or in a less formal environment is great for creativity and workflow. You're not so restricted by the limitations of a commercial studio and the cost that comes with it. I'm looking forward to putting down some fresh ideas."

Through two critically acclaimed albums and four singles, as well as international appearances at major festivals and clubs, The Bo-Keys have kept the spirit of classic Memphis music alive while also writing a vital new chapter for the sound and style that's etched into the fibre of American consciousness.

Coming together exclusively for Blues On Broadbeach, Marcus Scott and The Bo-Keys will be a one-of-a-kind performance not to be missed.

"Buckle your seatbelts and get ready for a ride. When we get moving and the music climbs up towards the higher states of consciousness, we plan to take you with us. It's gunna be a soul journey and Blues On Broadbeach will be coming along with us."

Blues On Broadbeach (Gold Coast) takes place 18-21 May.
