Australian Dinosaur Jr. fans are in for a double treat with guitarist, singer-songwriter J Masics adding a couple of solo shows to the band's run of dates next February-March.
Already slated to play Dinosaur Jr shows at Tent Pole in Geelong as well as Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, Mascis will stick around for an extra day in both Sydney and Brisbane.Named by Rolling Stone US in their recent 250 Greatest Guitarists all-time list (#74), the news arrives after last month's reveal that J will release his new solo album 'What Do We Do Now' (via Sub Pop) on 2 February, 2024.
It's J's first solo project to feature himself playing drum and electric leads; it also features a number of guest musicians including Western Mass local Ken Mauri of The B-52s on keys and Ontario-based polymath Matthew 'Doc' Dunn on steel guitar.
Released last month, 'Can't Believe We're Here' is the first taste of 'What Do We Do Now'.
"When I'm writing for the band, I'm always trying to think of doing things Lou and Murph would fit into," Mascis said in a statement.
"For myself, I'm thinking more about what I can do with just an acoustic guitar, even for the leads. Of course, this time, I added full drums and electric leads, although the rhythm parts are still all acoustic.
"Usually, I try to do the solo stuff more simply so I can play it by myself, but I really wanted to add the drums. Once that started, everything else just fell into place. So it ended up sounding a lot more like a band record. I dunno why I did that exactly, but it's just what happened."
