Great mates and good times, The Colliflowers are an indie-rock band from the Northern Rivers, specifically Alstonville.
The band comprises Gary Collocott (vocals), Rachael Goddard (drums), Nelson Ludeke (lead guitar), and Alex Pereira (bass), who are known for their high-energy live shows and catchy tunes.
With sold-out shows of their own in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as touring with The Rubens, DICE, Sun Room and The Vanns all over Australia, The Colliflowers have released three EPs since they dropped their debut single 'Corrupted Young Mind' in 2021.
Set to play Groovin The Moo this weekend in Lismore, The Colliflowers return to the road with three east-coast shows promoting their newest single 'Reruns'.
We sound like... We blend indie rock and pop into a feel-good, anthemic sound.
Our first gig was... The Beach Hotel in Byron Bay, fresh after COVID. The place was absolutely packed and we were all running on pure adrenaline.
It was one of those nights where everything just clicked. Definitely still one of our most memorable shows to date.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... The name came about when we shifted from being more of a solo project into a proper collective.
Gary Collocott originally started the band, but once everyone was fully in, we wanted it to feel equal across the board.
We kept a piece of the origin by blending 'Collocott' with 'cauliflower'. It was something a bit different, but easy to remember. That's how The Colliflowers was born.
In the studio we usually... Lock ourselves in and get to work. We're big on starting the day right with an early wake-up, a bit of exercise, then a strong coffee and a solid bacon and egg roll. After that, we're ready to go, usually until sunset. It's always a good time when we're all there together.
If we could tour with anyone... It would be a dream to hit the road with bands like Ocean Alley and Lime Cordiale. They've been massive influences on us, so sharing a stage with them would be pretty special.
Social media is... A big part of keeping everything moving. It's how we stay connected with people, share what we're up to, and keep everyone in the loop with new music and shows.
My favourite app at the moment is... 8 Ball Pool. You can never be too prepared. You never know when a venue's got a pool table and the competition is on.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... We were on our way to do a soundcheck in Brisbane and our vehicle broke down.
We then tried to be our own mechanic by filling it up with oil, but we noticed we'd overfilled it and all the oil had leaked onto the ground beneath the car.
Life on the road can be... Pretty exhausting at times, but if you do it right it's unreal. You get to see some amazing places, meet all sorts of people, and have experiences you wouldn't get anywhere else.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... A case of ginger beers for our drummer Rach, a case of Yulli's Sea Bass for the boys, and a delicious hot meal. That keeps the engines running.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... I think the scariest scenario would have been a show we played in Melbourne.
Gary, our lead singer, completely lost his voice before the show. The show went on to be a great time because of the love from our fans. However, it was very stressful.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... I think Kevin Hart would be the most iconic spokesperson. He's such a classic comedian and I love his energy.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? If we are completely honest, there's no place like home (Alstonville), we even wrote a song about it called 'Streets'.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party)... Jamie Oliver so he can cook a delicious feast for us. Paul McCartney, because it would be amazing to be in the same room as that legend. Jack Black, because who wouldn't want Nacho Libre at their dinner table. He also owns a Pratley guitar, which is what our frontman Gaz uses.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us? We would get the barbecue fired up, cook you some delicious and tender steaks and some authentic South African boerewors sausages. Paired with Alex's (bass guitarist) famous barbecue corn.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Massive lovers. Any dog we see is getting a pat. Gary has a pet cow named Baxter, and we all love spending time with him as well.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Guinness, so we can keep practising splitting the G and look like absolute pros at the pub.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Pretty regularly if you're Nelson (lead guitar). The rest of us are a bit more on and off, but we all try to stay active and spend a fair bit of time outdoors.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Folding washing and putting it away. No question.
Do you have any phobias... I'd say when you're walking in the dark and go face first into a spider web, nothing gets you moving quicker.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? Yeah, something like an island survival show would be unreal. Living off the land, catching fish, cooking it up should suit us quite well. Bit of a challenge but good fun at the same time.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? An oldie but a goodie is pointing at something when Alex is eating, and as he looks away eating a chip.
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? We are all suckers for the McSmart meal from Maccas. When we are heading home late after a show it's our go-to midnight feast.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Donkey from 'Shrek', 'cause in the morning I'm making waffles.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Peaky Blinders', because deep down we all want to be Thomas Shelby.
