The Generates are a five-piece garage rock band from Brisbane.
First emerging on the SE QLD music scene in 2018 as teenagers, cutting their teeth under the moniker of Plastik Reality, Brisbane garage rockers The Generates are currently sitting on a slew of new songs ready for an album release.
After releasing the single 'Self Assured' at the start of winter, the five-piece are back with 'George's Song' that continues their run of producing sonically pleasing indie rock with nods to The Strokes and The Growlers.
'George's Song' is about letting go of something that was really hard at the time, but seems right in retrospect. It's about not having hard feelings and wishing everyone the best, a goodbye song in that sense.
Ahead of the shows in Brisbane and Toowoomba (scroll down for details), the band check in for a quick chat.
Who are The Generates? Met in school with the introduction of Bailey; a few years later we had been playing for around three years under the moniker Plastik Reality.
Eventually developing our own unique sound of garage rock and writing an album's worth of material, we decided to change our name to The Generates to launch the new sound.
We sound like... Influenced by a variety of sounds from Rolling Stones to The Strokes to Metallica.
Our first gig was... At the Fiveways Hotel in Toowoomba 2019.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Around April/ May we made the decision to change the name suiting our new sound. Yes it was unanimous.
In the studio we usually... Fine-tune our sound for recording and record as much music as possible. Most songs are written prior to entering the studio.
If we could tour with anyone... The Rolling Stones or The Strokes.
Social media is... Becoming a requirement for promoting the band and music more and more, especially as we can't play as often as we'd like with COVID and everything going on at the moment. Great in moderation, online validation rules but some people find themselves practically living online.
My favourite app at the moment is... Tinder for obvious reasons haha. DOGTV, it's an app that plays TV designed for dogs. I do not own a dog.
To date, our most embarrassing moment was the time... All collectively being too drunk to play; happens too often to count, always embarrassing.
Life on the road can be... Full of debauchery. Tiring, lots of driving involved to get around everywhere. It's definitely worth it to be able to play all these different towns and cities around Australia. Wouldn't want any other job.
If you'll have us on your bill, all we ask is that our rider contains... XXXX Gold and Tinnies Pale Ales, heroin and brown M&Ms.
The most scary scenario we've found ourselves in, was... Insect museum... wait for album release.
What celebrity/ famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Clancy Sinnamon. Legendary creator of the comedy TV show 'The Smiths'.
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Not much of a traveller yet so hard to say. THANKS COVID. I guess New Orleans would be cool, I'd like to see the jazz music scene over there.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Nick Cave, Maggie Beer, Hamish Blake. Nick because he's my favourite songwriter, MaggiI to give me cooking tips, and HamisH because he'd provide entertaining conversations.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Curry, only thing I can competently cook haha. Chicken, lime and tarragon. It's my favourite meal and my mum makes it for me every time I visit my parents.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? Lover. I'm from a farm in NSW and at the moment there's eight dogs running around there! At one point my family had three dogs, five cats, three birds including a galah and a pond full of fish.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... XXXX Gold Expensive Faberge eggs.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... I did the induction at a gym two years ago and never went back haha.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Washing. Washing pile is always big somehow. Lawn mowing.
Do you have any phobias... Spiders. They're just gross.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? I really like mid 2000s 'Big Brother'. Anything silly with a bit of social manipulation is always entertaining. I don't watch that many reality shows, but a Survivor-type show would be interesting.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I've always thought Bailey (drummer) would look good bald, so definitely some sort of hair remover in his shampoo prank. I'll put a bleeding horse head in Ben's bed because he sleeps too much or for some other quite flimsy reason.
Best local takeaway joint for a 2am feed that will leave you with a food coma? Facefood Kebabs will serve you a greasy hsp at any time of the night. The downtown Subway in Toowoomba is open all night on Saturdays and it always does the job for me.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Dorothy the dinosaur due to my green skin.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Peep Show'. I've seen it countless times but every re-watch it only gets funnier. 'Peaky Blinders'. Just a great show; I can't fault it. Helps having Nick Cave as the intro song.
