Hollow Coves

From 27 December, 2025, Woodford Folk Festival returns for its 38th edition of music, art and culture at the iconic Woodfordia in Queensland.

Featured on the mammoth line-up (1,600-plus shows, 450-plus acts) is indie folk duo Hollow Coves, who return to the festival for the second time.

Hollow Coves' vocalist and guitarist Ryan Henderson has been attending Woodford Folk Festival since he was a teenager, and was inspired to start writing music after seeing Angus & Julia Stone at the festival.

"It's crazy to think back all those years now and the impact that that had on me and the music that I ended up making," Henderson explains over Zoom, back in Australia after their recent North American tour.

"I often would go to Woodford as a patron just as someone who loves the festival and I've been probably, I don't know, I've lost track now but I'd say like, probably eight or nine times over the years. . . it's definitely a surreal moment to be looking out from the other angle as a performer.

"My parents go every year, they'll be there again this year. So, that'll be sweet to have them there as well."

With Woodford Folk Festival being such a formative part of his life, Henderson has many memories of artists that he was inspired by and discovered by attending the festival.

"First one that comes to mind is a band called Half Moon Run, they are a Canadian band. The amazing thing about Woodford is they do bring a lot of international artists; like they have some sort of partnership with Canada particularly where they bring a lot of Canadian artists over. Half Moon Run was definitely a standout; like their live show is incredible.

"But also I saw like East Pointers there for the first time and a band called Tijuana Cartel. There was one New Year's where Tijuana Cartel played what was the chai tent at the time and it was incredible, such an amazing show."

Hollow Coves are coming to the tail-end of their touring cycle for their latest album 'Nothing To Lose'. It was five years between their debut album 'Moments' (2019) and 'Nothing To Lose' (2024), but it sounds like the gap for the next album may be shorter.

Henderson shares they've already written close to 50 songs. "We have actually been, this year, writing quite a lot. So, working towards another album. We've probably written the most that we've ever written in our career for an album.

"We just took a bit of a different approach, which was like 'let's just write as many songs as we can'. So we're coming up to about 50 songs that we've written so far for this next album, which usually we just write 15 and cut it down to 12 or 11 or whatever.

"But now we're coming up to 50 songs. We're like pretty stoked with some of the songs in there. We've still got to do all the demoing and all that sort of stuff, but that's kind of the plan. We want to take our time with this next album, demo it a lot and make sure that it is great."

Woodford Folk Festival 2025-26 is on from 27 December-1 January.
