girl in red Encourages People To Have Fun

I'm Keali and I live in Brisbane. I love anything cats, country or metal, and I love a good moshpit. When I'm not behind the camera or writing, I am probably at band practice or reading with my cat and a cup of tea.

After taking a break from music, girl in red returns to Australia for Adelaide's Spin Off music festival as well as a run of her own headline shows.

As Spin Off returns for its seventh year, the line-up boasts an eclectic mix of international talent including Conan Gray, DJ Seinfeld, Baby Gravy (Yung Gravy and BBNO$), The Last Dinner Party and Michael Marcagi as well as national stars G Flip and Peach PRC, alongside girl in red who, for the first time in three years, returns with a new album, 'I'm Doing It Again Baby!', that's poised to set Australian stages ablaze.

Despite navigating personal and professional challenges, girl in red has consistently made her mark since day one, particularly within the queer community, showcasing the undeniable influence of her music.

Recently speaking to Highnobiety, she talks about her struggles with writing her new album. "It feels like world domination seems almost impossible sometimes, and then I'm like, 'No, I'm going to do this f...ing sh.t'.

"I wasn't aware of all my different love languages, so, there are many great things I learned, too. But I wasn't aware that I was so jealous, insecure, or scared of being left.

"But it's important to talk about those things. Those are horrible feelings to have and not tell your partner about, because they will mostly likely be like, 'Honey, it's okay'.

"I just want everyone [of all ages] to hear the music," she says. "I also want to be able to tour the world and learn about different kinds of cultures."

During her conversation with Women In Pop (April 2024), girl in red delves into the intricate themes woven throughout her latest musical endeavours, offering profound insights and reflections.

With eloquence and depth, she articulates the essence of her creative journey, unveiling the layers of emotion and inspiration that have shaped her new work.

"I think before, [my music] hasn't had that much humour. But I think on this record, I just wanted to have more fun. And it's because I was having a lot of fun in my real life, and I was embracing jokes and humour in a much more profound way than I had before.

"Because before, I was viewing [the idea of] 'entertainment' in a way that I was kind of looking down on it. But then I started realising that it takes a lot of intellect to have a good sense of humour."

Following tours with Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, it's undeniable girl in red's packed schedule left its mark on the album and her creative process. She opens up about the journey to Highsnobiety.

"I was already in the midst of making the album when I was at the 'Eras' tour, but I was going through a rough patch. I was so unsure of everything, but then the tour just really cemented everything that I'd been leading up to."

Australia is buzzing with excitement to welcome girl in red, and there's no doubt she's just as thrilled to be playing shows. When chatting with Fraeulein back in 2021, she reflected on the aspects of touring that truly make it all worthwhile.

"What I miss the most is seeing the crowd going nuts. That is the best feeling: when playing a show and suddenly being super aware that I am here and this is my job, this is what I am doing.

"I remember having those moments just thinking 'What the f...?'. I have friends back home that are in school and I am here on the stage, performing! To me, this is so weird.

"After all, I just got out of school. It is a strange experience, realising that this is happening right now and that this is a real show and I am the one playing it."

In conversation with Dork April 2024, she shared some of the features of her next tour. "I'm easily bored and want to try new things that I think are fun. I want to do things that are interesting instead of trying to make something overly sad or seem smart. Fun is the new rock & roll."

She shares more about the tour with Highsnobiety, delving deeper into self-development as an artist and the importance it plays on delivering a good performance.

"My main goal is to try and keep the essence of a girl in red show, but also elevate it and challenge myself. I want to figure out: What kind of performer can I be? Am I the only girl with the guitar who's rocking out, or can I do something that's more choreographed?"

After reaching such extreme heights so early in her career, years later it's still surreal to girl in red that she gets to do what she does, sharing with Fraeulein: "What I miss the most is seeing the crowd going nuts. That is the best feeling: when playing a show and suddenly being super aware that I am here and this is my job, this is what I am doing."

In her conversation with Dork, she openly shares her core values. "I want to encourage people to have fun. There's something beautiful about lightness. It's very easy to overthink things, and it's very easy to smother your own project."
