AIR’s 2019 Best Independent Label Nominees

The 2019 AIR Awards are presented as part of Indie-Con Australia music conference.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

ABC Music, Chapter Music, Cooking Vinyl, I Oh You and Spirit Level have all picked up a nomination for Best Independent Label as part of the 2019 AIR Awards.

Presented by the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR), the annual AIR Awards recognises the exceptional efforts of independent artists and organisations, and is held in conjunction with AIR's Indie-Con Australia Conference.

Congratulations to these five labels on their nomination, joining a diverse melting pot of nominees this year.

Singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, Indigenous multi-instrumentalist Gurrumul and folk musician Laura Jean lead the charge with three nominations each. While G Flip, Confidence Man and Emily Wurramara are each finalists in two categories.

Courtney Barnett, Gurrumul and Laura Jean are each nominated for the Best Independent Artist (as are Julia Jacklin and Methyl Ethel) and Best Independent Album or EP (as are Emma Louise and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever) awards. Read the full list of 2019 AIR Awards nominees here.

In 2018, Milk! Records were awarded Best Independent Label. Co-founder of Milk! Records Jen Cloher commented on the win: “Winning the Best Independent Label at the AIR Awards last year was a wonderful recognition of all the hard work that so many of us do behind the scenes in the independent music community."

The 2019 AIR Awards will be held at the Freemasons Hall (Adelaide) 25 July.
