It’s A Block Party: Celebrate Colombian Independence Day

Brisbane, prepare for a fiesta! This Sunday July 20 your city is donning sombreros and sprouting last-minute crumb-catchers to celebrate Colombian Independence Day.

On July 20th 1810 Colombia became a self-governing republic uprising against Spanish rule, since then their cultural identity has been celebrated worldwide — and for the first time in 204 years, the celebration will finally make its way as far as Brisbane.

To celebrate the independence of the most northwestern tip of South America, Brisbane's Anne and Ballow Street (where GPO is situated) will transform into a vibrant and exotic street style festival featuring Colombian music, dancing, beverages and food, all in the name of freedom, a good homegrown burrito and a cold South American lager.

The red, yellow and blue block party will be hosted by Kip and Luttsy from Nova and Colombian ambassador Daniela Pinoa; while the event will boast three stages, dance classes, and a list of live acts and performers. The fiesta starts at midday outside the GPO Hotel and every member of the family can immerse themselves in the rich and vibrant Colombian culture with free entry for kids aged under 12, while those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. See you there, muchacho. Don't forget your poncho.
