5 Snacks For Long, Car Drives With Martha Baartz

Martha Baartz

Martha Baartz is an Australian alto-saxophonist well known for her energy and spirited, melodic and soulful playing and composing.

Martha has performed at many festivals including: Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, Glastonbury Festival and the Edinburgh Festival.

With Shannon Marshall (trumpet/ vocals), Steve Russell (piano), David Sanders (drums) and Helen Russell (double bass), Martha’s delta blues, New Orleans funk compositions and shimmering images of sound will uplift the audience at the Brisbane Jazz Club this Friday 24 April.

But before then, Martha needs to pack the band a quick lunch. Here are her favourite snacks for long, car drives.

1. Banana

A quick, energy hit; cheap for the muso budget; and quick to digest.

2. Thermos

A hot drink (preferably caffeinated although peppermint tea will do) warms the cockles of the heart, so you can perform with soul.

3. Vitamin B

Vitamin B injection for a succession of late-night shows (yes, it's been done before).

4. Smoked Salmon & Avocado Hors-d'oeuvre

Generally for free at wedding gigs.

5. Cut-Offs

Speaking of wedding gigs, small cut-offs from guests' main meal as specified in the band contract under 'Band Meal'.

The Martha Baartz Quintet performs at the Brisbane Jazz Club 24 April.
