Tomorrow and the following Friday (17 April), experimental siren MKO will descend upon West End’s much-loved, offbeat, grunge bar The Bearded Lady, debuting an extended six-piece band and a healthy swag of new, unreleased material from her upcoming album.
MKO is the brainchild and alias of Hannah Macklin – multi-faceted singer, songwriter, producer and artist, who, since she can remember, has always been wildly excited by the potential of imagination. Reaching outside the realm of what is normal in modern, pop music, MKO brings together a vast array of influences – from Ravel to The Neptunes. Distinctly loathing labels, she describes the sound as simply “experimental”, adding “MKO must be heard. Words are only words.”
We wanted to mine MKO's “experimental” thoughts, and decided she would be ideal to list a range of quirky, left-of-field dinner-party-theme suggestions.
1. Stuff It!
A selection of foods, stuffed with other foods. You then stuff your face with said foodstuffs, and stuff off.2. Gangsta Wrap
Interactive wrap workshop featuring rice-paper wraps, lettuce wraps and burritos with varied fillings. Which of your friends loads their wrap with too much filling? Enjoy laughing at them as it falls apart.3. Takin' Sides
A buffet of classic, side dishes served as mains. Good for vegetarians.4. The Saucerer
A wide variety of pasta sauces in pots, served around a huge platter of pasta.5. Nice 'N' Toast-Tea
Never underestimate the awesome power of toast, toppings and tea. Sourdough, rye, bagels, all toasted to perfection and topped with classics like avocado, Vegemite or grilled cheese ranging to more experimental choices like banana and blue cheese or tomato and peanut butter.Catch MKO and her new six-piece band at The Bearded Lady Fridays 10 & 17 April.
