5 Lessons GLVES Learned Growing Up Feeling Like An Outsider

GLVES (pronounced 'gloves') is a Kaurareg, Fijian First Nations alt-pop artist born in lutruwita (Tasmania) and based in Magandjin (Brisbane).

Known for her emotive storytelling, layered vocals, and immersive electronic textures, her sound is cinematic and bold, yet tender – music that lives between worlds.

Before she releases her debut EP 'Belonging' on 10 October (pre-save it), she is taking her songs and electric performance to the stage at BIGSOUND 2025.

With previous live performances at Dark Mofo, Splendour In The Grass, Ministry of Sound Classical, and most recently Blak Day Out 2025 channelling her mastery of multi-sensory art, GLVES' BIGSOUND appearance will showcase material from 'Belonging' (which was produced by ARIA-winning producer Rob Amoruso who has worked with Baker Boy), including her newest single 'Honesty'.

"It's about being stuck in a relationship you can't disconnect from, yet can't move forward in either," GLVES says.

"At some point, you just have to be honest with them, no more holding back, no more pretending. It's a raw, vulnerable moment where truth-telling is the only way forward."

Like every GLVES release, this song is a story in itself: the high-speed drums play into frantic energy that comes with trying to break out of being strung along, confronting someone to tell them you want more or nothing at all.

Ahead of her showcases at BIGSOUND, GLVES shares some advice from her own childhood for those who feel like outsiders. "I grew up with a constant undercurrent of existential fear, raised in a cult that taught the world could end at any moment.

"As a mixed-race kid in a white town, far from family and in a dysfunctional home, I learned to hide behind a mask to survive.

"My artist name, GLVES, comes from the gloves I wore as a child to cover a painful skin condition, a way to take part in the world while hiding the truth of who I was, trying to belong but never feeling like I did.

"Now, through music, art, and creativity, I strip away that mask and reclaim myself. These are the top five lessons I've learned from growing up as an outsider."

Your difference is your direction

The traits that once made me feel out of place are now the compass that guides me forward.

Fear was my cage – truth became my key

I was taught to stay small for safety, but playing small doesn't protect you, it just traps you.

You have to feel it to heal it

I used to bury my emotions to survive. Now I let myself feel it all, and turn those emotions into music and art.

You can grow your own family

Family can be chosen. Love can be built from scratch, and with safe people we can learn the healthy relationships we were never shown.

What you once hid can heal others

My shame showed me the wounds that weren't mine to carry. Forgiving myself for the patterns that kept me alive gave me space to learn new ways of being, and to offer my truth as a light for others.
