Play The Incredibly Depressing Joy Division Video Game

When routine bites hard, and ambitions are low, and resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow, it's time to advance to the next level.

European developer Mighty Box Games has created Will Love Tear Us Apart?, a free-to-play browser game about "relationships on the brink of breaking up" based on Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. Escapism for the win!

Each verse of the song is represented in a different level of the game, which is supposed to encourage players to "reflect on the darker side of love: miscommunication, emotional impasse and the sadness of separation... What guides this game is an ambition to frustrate, upset, and sting the player into remembering the dark days preceding the death of a relationship."

Oh, those wacky Europeans.

Gordon Calleja — the project's creator, designer and writer — first thought of adapting the song into a video game back in 2011, and has spent the last two years attempting to incorporate the post-punk band's distinctively gloomy imagery into his project. As you can see from the above trailer, he succeeded.

Play Will Love Tear Us Apart? until you just can't function no more here.
