I am a fashion designer with a self-titled label, Zara McKenna. My garments are made locally in Brisbane and focus on quality, individuality and style. I work independently on my label so I take care of all the designing, creativity and marketing as well as the business side of things. My new women's collection, Harlequin, is out today.
Why do you do it?
After high school I decided to skip university and give it a go myself. By taking small steps my label grew organically and I haven’t looked back since. Owning a small business is a constant challenge but it is rewarding, unique and never dull. Being my own boss has its advantages too!
What do you love about the city you live in?
I love Brisbane because it’s relaxed, laid back and has great variety. I find it more liveable and stress-free then some of the other major cities in Australia.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Last December I went to Japan with my boyfriend. We saw amazing temples, ate delicious food and embraced their unique culture. We fell in love with the historic city Kyoto.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
The ZM Frill Singlet. It’s my signature piece and a design I’m definitely proud of. It’s easy to wear, versatile and at $59.95 it’s an affordable designer garment.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
It would have to be cartoons in general. Disney shows and Cartoon Network were my favourites.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would travel back to the 31st December 1999. I was living in Holland with my family about to celebrate the turn of the millennium. It was a very special time.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
A curry feast! I love to cook so I would serve a couple of Thai or Indian curries with a nice bottle of wine.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
To live life one day at a time. It is important to make goals and have direction but you can’t overlook the present. I have turned my passion into a full time job so I’m lucky I don’t count down the clock at work. I try to enjoy each day and stay stress free because time is so precious.

I am quite an open person so don’t have anything secretive really! Fun facts about me: I’m 21, I have a Great Dane and my new favourite hobby is surfing!
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Currently – yes. It’s always something I will have to work on. It’s a unique situation being your own boss and working from home so I do have to constantly assess my work/life balance. Balance in my life is when I’m happiest.
How do you define success?
I’ve realised success is individual. I try not to compare myself to others and instead focus on my goals and achievements. For me, happiness is paramount to success.
What's your spirit animal?
A Great Dane. They are loving, loyal, empathetic, hilarious dogs and always bring a smile to people’s faces. I would get sick of the horse and saddle jokes but it would be worth it.
