Serenity Furjan - scenestr of the day

What do you do?
I am a mother of a very happy little man named Atari; I promote and advocate great local music and passionately get involved with music as much as I can! I have started (with a few other music maniacs) a non-profit project called 'The One Day Project'. We choose particular causes that are near and dear to us and consciously get the positive message out through the medium of music! I help organise and book benefit shows under the One Day banner. We are putting on a show at the Evelyn Hotel in Melbourne on August 30 for Bowel Cancer Australia, it's our bid to 'Rock Your Arse Off!'

Why do you do it?
My initial incentive was to raise funds and awareness for autism on a yearly basis by putting on benefit shows. I was inspired to do so when my son Atari was diagnosed with ASD in 2008 — it challenged me over the years due to people's ignorance of what autism is. But now it's gone past that notion. As a group at the One Day Project, we know of too many organisations that are losing out. This is our way to put all ego aside, be selfless for the night and day and give into the goodness of the community spirit! We want to grow this into not only events, but also help kids out there that want to be involved in something else. Get them up off their butts and give them life!

There are so many ideas that rattle in my head about how to help kids these days. When I was a kid, it wasn't too complicated to amuse yourself! Nowadays it is. Kids are led into some dangerous aspects of life; tempted by drugs and crime. No kid deserves that life, nor does their family. There is much to make of these ideas... But I will find my daybreak eventually and get 'THAT' Project up and running!

What do you love about the city you live in?
I adore Melbourne's artist culture. Every block is different. Every street is different. Every suburb is different. So much culture! We have so much going on it's extremely overwhelming. I LOVE IT! A sensual delight. It''s a city of now! Not yesterday... but happily highlights the yesteryears! It's a wonderful city to bring up children in! It's just a great city to be in!

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Last holiday that I had was to regional Victoria with a couple of mates in some local bands. We headed up to Mildura, actually just over the border for an all-ages show; it was great to see how hungry the kids are for music! We in Victoria need this to establish our growth as a state. Kids need entertainment to get them off the streets doing harm to themselves and others!

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
That's a tricky one… I'd have to say my red Converse sneakers. They just look great with a lot of things that I wear, and they're a trusty companion for any gigs that I attend!

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
Hmm... there were a few. I was a fan of He-Man and She-Ra. Daas Kapital and Rage as I got older.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I'm really stuck in the now… the past has been, there were good times, I'd like to keep that memory!

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
Lasagne… I make a mean one! Haha!

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
When you have been defeated... try again!

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I'm learning to love myself again!

Are you happy with your work/life balance?
I sure am!

How do you define success?
Success is what you make of it. I'm inspired by pro skater/visionary/good egg/entrepreneur Rob Dyrdek; his mantras are made of dreams... 'In life some people trip and some fall but some take that trip and make a beautiful dance out of it'.

What's your spirit animal?
I'm a bit of a hybrid. I dream of birds a lot, all different types... but I also have a material connection to felines. Strange!
