I have spent most of my career as a costume designer and maker, but now only do that on a freelance basis. I work part-time painting ceramics and spend the rest of my time concentrating on my art practise. I have a group show coming up in December and a solo show in August next year at Lethbridge Gallery.
Why do you do it?
I have no choice, it’s just who I am. No matter how full on, exhausting and stressful it can be at times, if I don’t do it I start to feel like I can’t breathe.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I live in Brisbane, I loathe the heat but my family is here so I can’t imagine being anywhere else.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Straddie. It happened to be on fire at the time so that was pretty exciting! My son and I found a special spot where the dolphins come into the shore. We spent ages hanging out with them, it was magical.
What's your favourite item of clothing?
I’ve spent my whole life making clothing or costumes, I used to make everything I wore. Now I couldn’t care less! I’m a busy, single mum so spend most of my time in jeans and t-shirts. But I do love to dress up when I get the chance. Leopard print and black and white stripes feature pretty heavily and black and more black and a bit more black.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
‘The Wizard Of Oz’ was/ is my favourite movie. I love/ loved the Wicked Witch. ‘HR Puff ’n’ Stuff’ was pretty great as far as TV shows go. ‘Witchey Poo’ was awesome. I think she’s where I got my love of stripes from.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
Too many options but right now I’d go back to this exact time last year, and make it last a bit longer.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
If I have the time I love to cook Indian, so I’d probably do a Cardamon chicken curry among other things.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows…
Can’t possibly.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
Work has always played a major part in my life, it’s always a bit too much but I’m no good at doing nothing and I love what I do, so I guess on the whole I’m pretty happy with it. Just never enough hours in the day.
How do you define success? Being able to do what you love and be with the people that you love.
