Apart from my day job as a school teacher, I’m also one of the directors of the Red Deer Music & Arts Festival, a boutique BYO camping music and arts festival on the outskirts of Brisbane.
Why do you do it?
Good question — my wife has asked me this a number of times. I guess I get a lot of satisfaction out of being able to experience and enjoy the end product, every decision we make regarding Red Deer has the best interests of the festival goers in mind… it’s all about the experience! I also love organising events — we literally do everything for Red Deer ourselves, so the planning and assembling of all the pieces of the puzzle is a process I really enjoy. Julz and Bas are the other directors, two mates from high school, so we have a great time (stressful at times) pulling this off!
What do you love about the city you live in?
Brisbane — the weather, and it’s an easy city to live in.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Burleigh Heads. Oh yeah, the other best thing about Brisbane is that it’s only an hour away from Burleigh!
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
A hat — saves me having to worry about my hair.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
It’s A Knockout! 6:00am Saturday morning. I think they tried to recreate it recently. Not the same.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
Probably go back and check out Woodstock. Those guys who pulled that off are amazing. Over 500,000 people — it‘s incredible!
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
Well it’s winter, so a nice pumpkin with heaps of other good stuff, including bacon (the new onion) SOUP.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Learn something new everyday. Listen…
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Probably not. Running a music festival and working full time is, at times, ridiculous. I’ m still young though, and still trying to work out the “perfect” balance.
How do you define success?
When you know you have given everything!
