Stephanie Dennis-Fernandez – scenestr of the day

What do you do?
Administration support by day, writer by night! I feel like Clark Kent at times, performing in a pretty mundane job then letting the real fun begin when I get home. I am currently writing the third book in my 'Winter Lost' series.

Why do you do it?
I absolutely love to write. I find it helps me to escape from life, and offers me a creative avenue that compares to nothing else. My dream is to one day become a renowned author, but I know this is something that will not happen overnight. That’s the reason for my day job, getting me by while I chip away at my dream. That and I like to eat – very much.

What do you love about the city you live in?
Brisbane is like a clam. People on the outside looking in think there’s nothing too special about our little city, but little do they know, deep within it throbs a unique culture full of theatre-goers, musicians, writers, foodies, and lovers of life. We are probably one of the most underrated cities of Australia, and I love that I am beginning to experience all it has to offer.

Where did you go for your last holiday?
New Zealand. I got to explore the wonders of the small towns Twizel and Makarora, and the bustling tourist hotspot Queenstown. This was my third time to New Zealand, and I swear I’ll never tire of it.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
My Black Milk Spartan leggings. Black, lacey, and go with everything.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'Pokémon' or 'Sailor Moon'!

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
Probably back to the day I got married so I could do it all over again. I know, so cliché!

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
Definitely spaghetti bolognese. Do you know why? I have a new pasta maker machine and everyone must experience it when they enter my house. Everyone.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Everything happens for a reason. Oh, you didn’t get the part in that play? That’s because a bigger and better role was coming up for you! Oh, Steve didn’t return any of your texts? Thank your lucky stars because little did you know he lives in his mother’s basement!

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I can’t help but binge watch 'The Real Housewives Of Melbourne'. Please don’t tell my family.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
I believe I have an extremely healthy work/ life balance. I go to work, work on my novels, see my friends and family often, and also get to have some me-time and the chance to relax.

How do you define success?
Success is in the eye of the beholder. To me, success can be as simple as contentment. It could be sitting with your family, enjoying a nice meal, all of you being together and happy. It could be you having a child, or you finally getting a reply from a publisher. Success is a journey of a lot of little things along the way.

What's your spirit animal?
An elephant. Family oriented, constantly on the look out for food, and will not take anyone messing with the ones that they care about. That trunk is a weapon!
