I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. [Check out Mat's work at jumpy.com.au.]
Why do you do it?
I love creative stuff. I started drawing pictures with my sister at a very young age and never stopped.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I love the changing scene, everything from galleries and pop up shops to small bars — these days it seems nothing stays the same for long in Old Sydney Town. Enjoy the ride.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
New York, New York... with a stop over in Los Angeles. It was amazing — food, drinks, culture and people. I can't wait to go back.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
A Johnny Cupcakes t-shirt from his recent pop-up store in Sydney. I met the man behind the brand, he's an incredibly nice guy.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
Transformers, robots in disguise [makes odd transforming sound].
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
A time when I could be around my entire family, enjoying life and the people I love.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
I might have to cook up a clam (seafood) chowder. After trying them in the USA I'm a little bit addicted. Otherwise I'd serve up tacos or a pasta dish, washed down with some local brews like Young Henry's, which is made right up the road from me [mmm, beer].
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
To never stop learning, and enjoy every second of it — I discover new tricks every day and it's wonderful.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I wish I was a famous white rapper. Check, check... yup, never gonna happen.
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Currently I'm freelancing and doing a bit of training in web site design, so I'm happy to have a bit of freedom in my work life. I've worked jobs with long hours and mad deadlines so taking a break has really made my creativity blossom.
How do you define success?
Creativity is my goal, the more creative I can be the more I feel complete. The freedom to experiment with ideas and hopefully to teach and inspire others along the way.
What's your spirit animal?
I wouldn’t have thought it a few years ago, but I think a cat. The little guy we got from the Cat Protection Society has bought so much joy. Except for the butt licking; I'm not down with that.
