I’m a contemporary jeweller.
Why do you do it?
I love making everything, especially wearable pieces. There’s something so satisfying about being able to transform one thing into another. I enjoy being able to share that experience with others.
What do you love about the city you live in?
Adelaide’s so close to everything. You can drive 20 minutes from the city and be at a beautiful beach or in the hills. There are a lot of reserves and creeks where I grew up. I spent the majority of my childhood in the outdoors hiking, yabbying or catching frogs. I think we’re pretty lucky, in that we can have the best of both worlds.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
I went camping to Innes National Park, towards the end of the York Peninsula. It was breathtaking. I got woken up one morning to a group of kangaroos checking out the campsite.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
An altered dress from the '80s. When I found this dress at an op shop, I fell in love with the vibrant fabric. It originally had exaggerated shoulders, which I took off to make the dress more current.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'The Simpsons'. My mum banned me from watching it. That made me like it a whole lot more.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would go back 100 years and see the Great Barrier Reef.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
A fondue with bread croutons, white wine and cheese and crepes for dessert.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows…
I have supersonic hearing for high-frequency sounds.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
It’s pretty good at the moment. Sometimes it can be a bit of a juggling act. I’m still getting the hang of running my own business.
How do you define success?
To live content and be surrounded by good company.
What's your spirit animal?
I’m not sure, something nocturnal.
Laurence will join other stallholders at the Bowerbird Design Market at Wayville Pavilion Adelaide Showground 5-7 May.
