Kate Branson – scenestr of the day

Kate Branson
What do you do?
By day, Kate Branson Admin and Membership Officer at West Australian Music. By different time of day, Katie Radical local band publicist and manager. By night … do whatever I want, no job.

Why do you do it?
Because I love music. Can’t do it, so try to be involved in any other way possible, even if that is just fan-girling.

What do you love about the city you live in?
BANDS. MUSIC. BEACH. WARM. WARM. BANDS. WARM. MUSIC. Yes?

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Whoa, like real-deal holiday out of Australia? Would be Vietnam and Cambodia, but that’s a couple of years ago now, why? FOOD… also warm. More recently, mini-breaks to Gracetown are a must every couple of months. Sunflowers Animal Farm near Margs is like the best thing ever. I love to cuddle the guinea pigs and the one-eyed horse is like, just so cool.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
My blue banana hat! It’s blue and has BANANAS ON IT!

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
Undoubtedly 'Sailor Moon'. I wanted to be ANY of those girls so hard.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
March 2011 (can’t remember the exact date), to The Bakery the night WAVVES played. My favourite gig ever. Watching the crowd infiltrate the stage for the final song ‘King Of The Beach’. The band’s amps, guitars and drums crowdsurfing outward… without the band, no music anymore but everyone is clapping the beat and screaming along with Nathan Williams ‘KING OF THE BEACH’.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Cauliflower cheese… cos it’s just frikkin' yum.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
You’re going to stuff up and feel really stupid about it. It will flash back in your mind at inconvenient, random moments and make you feel really stupid again. But you just have to pick yourself up, brush yourself off and put yourself out there again.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I hate peas. I eat them to look fancy and adult and stuff but deep down inside, when I’m eating them, I’m dying.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
I still have time to binge watch shows regularly so, yeah I am.

How do you define success?
By being happy in everything that you’re doing.

What's your spirit animal?
Turtles! In particular, bread that is shaped like turtles. Turtle bread.

Kate is part of the WAM team organising SOTA Festival (Perth) 5 June.
