Julie White – scenestr of the day

Julie White
What do you do?
I'm a textile print designer with a fashion background. I run my own, small label of printed accessories, specialising in silk scarves and hosiery featuring original my art prints.

Why do you do it?
Because I've never set my eyes on doing anything else.

What do you love about the city you live in?
I love doing what I'm doing and not feeling like I have to live in a bigger city to do it. The Adelaide scene may be small and it often feels like you know everybody, but it's a really supportive place for creativity. I like having the space to work and space to think. I visit interstate regularly for work trips so perhaps this gives a good balance.

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Kuala Lumpur, where my sister-in-law's family lives. Climbing a mountain and swimming in a waterfall near a bunch of monkeys was a nice change of scenery.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
This tiger-print dressing gown made from the most horrible polyester in the '80s. I found it in an op-shop for 50c and can never let it go because I love the print so much.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'You Can't Do That On Television'.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Lately I've been experimenting with native spices, so it would have to be washed down with some interesting cocktails. At the moment I love Tasmanian pepper berry and strawberry gum!

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Good things take time.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I dance stupidly in the studio when I've sat down for too long. But the Telstra building across from me probably knows that.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
Never. But that's probably a good sign things are changing.

What's your spirit animal?
Australian parakeets of all kinds.
