Why do you do it?
I can’t stand seeing a great band playing to no one in a bar. Or hear great music that no one knows about. It just feels criminal to me. I got no time for mediocre stuff, so when I hear something awesome that isn’t getting attention I think it should, I want to help.
What do you love about the city you live in?
Melbourne is great 'cause there’s always something going on. I always took it for granted until I started visiting other Australian cities. There’s so much love for music here and there seems to be no shortage of people wanting to absorb it. You can go out every night of the week and find incredible bands playing live. People are just excited. And they fight to put shows on and get music out to the masses, so there’s a great energy here.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Haha I don’t do holidays. Last time I had some time off over Christmas or something I built benches for my backyard and a tiki bar. My housemate said I’m one of the only people he knows that can’t deal with down time. I do plenty of sightseeing with my band Pretty City though. We travel a bit interstate and went to SXSW last year.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
I have a grey blazer that looks like it’s straight out of a Duran Duran video clip. It’s from the woman clothing store Katies. I have no idea how I got it. It just arrived in my closet one day. I put it on for a gig and never looked back. Every now and then I think: “Oh that old thing. That won’t look good on anymore.” And then I put it on and it rocks.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'Rocko's Modern Life'. It wasn’t until recently that I realised that Rocko's accent was supposed to be Australian, 'cause he’s a wallaby! He always sounded weird to me. Also lots of rude jokes in there that are only apparent as an adult. Like Heifer works at a chicken shop called Choky Chickens.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
I must say, I put on a mean house party that are never short of cocktails and food. My fave party food is pulled-pork mini rolls with coleslaw. Smoking pork for 12 hours is worth every minute for these little rolls of heaven. If I’ve visited mum recently, you may also be privy to her legendary potato salad.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Forget 'i before e except after c'. It’s bullshit.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
When my socks and undies are too worn out to wear anymore I throw them in the compost bin.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
My family certainly aren’t!
How do you define success?
When my back-yard tiki bar features in a glossy magazine. I’m close. I have a contact at Smith mag. Fingers crossed.
What's your spirit animal?
Penguin, 'cause they have a cheerful outlook on life, they’re cute, always dressed formal, like hanging with lots of people and when the elements are too hard to bear they get close and cuddle.
