I manage a bunch of contemporary music (record) labels for ABC Music/ FOUR FOUR. We are part of ABC Commercial, which forms part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that we all know and love.
Why do you do it?
Simply; I love music. That is how it all started and that is why I continue doing it.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I live in Sydney and I love that we pay more for things here, that we get told to go home earlier than other states, and that we have more rules than anywhere else in the western world. Of course I jest…
Where did you go for your last holiday?
USA. Drove from LA to Las Vegas for a four-day punk-rock festival, then drove through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico into Texas (Austin). Then flew to New York for a week. Was a great trip! Off to Japan in a month, which I can’t wait for too!
What's your favourite item of clothing?
My leather jacket or my Ray-Bans… because they are both timeless pieces and undeniably cool.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? (If you've got kids, what's your favourite show to watch with them?)
I have kids and we all LOVE to watch 'Adventure Time'. My son first showed me the show and sometimes I watch with my daughter and son, and sometimes I just watch by myself I love it that much. Super quirky, sometimes very psychedelic and at times quite emotional too. When I was a kid I used to watch heaps of 'M*A*S*H'… dunno why, I just loved it.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
A time when rock & roll was scary and meant something. A time when just by writing a song you could change an entire generation and their way of thinking. That would be great to experience.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Beer Butt Jerk Chicken. Such a great way to cook. Maybe we could have it on tacos with homemade Pico de Gallo, cabbage slaw and plenty of hot sauce.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Don’t be a dickhead. No matter what. The power of PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) is a big thing, embrace it.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
If I was to be born a girl my name would be Ruth. I always struggled with the name Basil, but Ruth is something I would have changed.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
Sometimes work is my life… and that’s okay by me. I mean I get paid to listen to music all day! That is awesome.
How do you define success?
Happiness of any accomplishments you have achieved. Either big or small.
What are you most looking forward to about Australian Music Week 2017?
Celebrating great music with great people and the best brains in the business today.
How important is an event like to the Australian Music Scene?
It brings everyone together and showcases the incredible talent that we have in this country. There is so much great music in Australia right now and events like AMW are perfect for spotlighting this.
