I’m a stand-up comedian.
Why do you do it?
When I was at school, the kids used to pinch my nipples and sing the national anthem. I think there’s some deep-seated rage about that. It’s also nice to have people listen to my ideas about migrants or shetland ponies.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I grew up in NZ and Brisbane is a warmer, happier version of that place. I spend a lot of time alone to write and practice and they’ve made this city pretty welcoming to loners with parklands, beaches and a duck lake right in the middle of town. A lot of others cities focus their CBDs purely on bankers and shopkeepers.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
India for my cousin’s wedding.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
I just got a new pair of brown trackpants. They’re so comfortable. They’re also a little bit fancy with two front pockets, so could probably wear them to a job interview.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'Quantum Leap'. I was obsessed with the idea of time travel and would research ways to do it.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
There’s a Louis CK bit about how travelling back in time is super dangerous for brown people. So I would probably go forward instead to the year 3000 to make sure we’re still here and hang with my genetically-enhanced descendants.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
A salmon curry with bits of white peach chopped in.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Some smart people once taught me to separate between what happens to me in life and the interpretation I have about that event. I learned that a lot of misery comes from a harmful and unnecessary interpretation, so I try to keep that in mind.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
I am now. I run a small business with some friends and so am able to balance work, comedy and duck lake time. If anything, it’s a bit too much life, not enough work. So I would like to fix that this year, so I can buy a car and a double bed.
How do you define success?
Fulfilment plus being able to support yourself.
What's your spirit animal?
The mongoose. The meerkat is enjoying more success at the moment due to 'Meerkat Manor', comparethemarket.com.au and other propaganda campaigns. But the mongoose’s time will come.
