Alex Carney
What do you do?
I study film and television at Deakin University.

Why do you do it?
Because I want to be able to have a career doing something I love and find challenging, rather than just going though the motions!

What do you love about the city you live in?
Melbourne. I love, love, love the coffee.

Where did you go for your last holiday?
I just got back from a semester abroad in California, America!

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
Definitely my beanies. Because keeping your ears warm is underrated, and it acts as my hair straightener.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'The Simpsons' by a country mile.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
To go see the dinosaurs of course.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
The most delicious succulent, medium-rare steak, with mash and greek salad, that you have ever had.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
I started studying sport science, then randomly decided I would pick up film. I didn’t want to quit sport science so decided I would study both degrees. The amount of people that told me it wasn’t possible to study the two degrees con-currently was ridiculous. I endeavoured and proved them wrong. The lesson learnt was that people will always tell you no because it’s easy, therefore you should and must prove them wrong!

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I make an amazing vanilla slice.

Are you happy with your work/life balance?
No. I wish everyday was a party, and it will be when I win the $40,000 for my entry in SuperCheap Auto’s Bathurst Big Break competition. Coming back from the states with quite a debt, the work/life balance hasn’t been great!

How do you define success?
Winning $40,000. Doing something you love for a living.

What's your spirit animal?
A big turkey.
