Samantha Goldie - scenestr of the day

What do you do? I work full time for LUCAS Restaurants as their in-house music curator, providing playlists for all their venues, booking the DJs and organising anything music related. On the weekends I DJ around Melbourne and of course, do my radio show 'Boss Action' (as Miss Goldie) on PBS every Saturday (3pm).

Why do you do it? I love music. I started as a DJ at GoGo Bar, one of Lucas' venues ten years ago and the job grew into what it is now. I feel very lucky to have turned it into a full-time position. I DJ most weekends because I love playing my records out; collecting 45s is my biggest passion and sharing them with others never gets tiring.

What do you love about the city you live in? I moved to Melbourne from Sydney about 15 years ago because of the vibrant music scene here and it's still delivering. Melbourne celebrates the niche and I just love that.

Where did you go for your last holiday? Adelaide to visit my parents; it had been too long. When I go to Adelaide I have to eat tea-smoked duck from Ying Chow on Gouger St and spaghetti napoli with ricotta from Lucia's in the Central Market.

What's your favourite item of clothing? My fabulous new woollen coat with faux fur trim.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? 'Dr Who'.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go? 1970 anywhere in America to hit up all the record shops.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Lamb, pine nut and feta pie in filo or a pumpkin version for vegetarians with a side of pilaf and a pomegranate and preserved lemon salad.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned? You don't have to be the best, just try to be your personal best. We are all running our own race. This may sound trite, but it will make you feel so much better about everything in your life.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance? I need to get better at having down time. I often work seven days a week. It's the perils of loving your job and always having a record to buy.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows... I am absolutely terrified of public speaking. I can DJ in front of thousands, but stand me in front of even 20 people and I'll clam up!

How do you define success? Being happy with your life and surrounding yourself with good people.

What's your spirit animal? A pampered house cat.
