Salvatore Maicki - scenestr of the day

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and some beyond.
What do you do? I'm the head of A&R (artists and repertoire) for an indie record label, which means signing talent, and helping our roster develop their individual projects.

Why do you do it? I worked as a music journalist for years, but had never considered that the skills you hone in the editorial space are very analogous to the ones that working in A&R requires. Once I started thinking more broadly about what I want to contribute through my work, beyond the confines of digital media, A&R sort of revealed itself to me as something that could direct the existing curatorial and conversational aspects of my career toward something more substantial.

What do you love about the city you live in? New York – the attitude, the camaraderie, the institutions that persist despite fluctuating demographics, and the beaches, which don't get nearly enough love.

Where did you go for your last holiday? My friend Emily and I did a gorgeous little jaunt to Italy in April; Easter in Napoli, a few sunny days in Ischia, and ending in Rome.

What's your favourite item of clothing? These big blue French farmers' trousers I copped at the Manhattan vintage fair a few years back. They were so tattered that when I brought them to my tailor, she admonished me for even wanting to try to mend them, but I'm so glad she gave it a shot. I feel like myself in them.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? 'Animaniacs'.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go? I just want to experience New York in the late '70s – give me one night to hop from CBGB to Paradise Garage, and then enough time to put a down payment on an apartment in Soho.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us? Chicken piccata.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned? To log off Twitter.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows... Every single time I shave, I cut myself in the exact same spot.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance? They bleed into each other in a beautiful way that I don't mind, which feels like an immense privilege.

How do you define success? Personal enlightenment, albums of photographs of people and places, and a nice breeze.

What's your spirit animal? The monkey Peter Gabriel was singing about was shocking.

The Senior A&R at The FADER Label Salvatore Maicki will take part in Deal Making In The Age Of AI and How To A&R panels as part of Indie-Con Australia and A2IM's Indie Week Australian Edition, which takes place in Adelaide from 30 July to 1 August.
