Nathan Sibthorpe - scenestr of the day

What do you do?
When possible, I make theatre. At the moment I’m directing the Short+Sweet Festival in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, which means coordinating over 50 short works of theatre and cabaret. It’s not necessarily making the theatre, but it’s making the theatre possible, so that’s still exciting.

Why do you do it?
I could not imagine not doing it. I think it’s important, and I think that we need more people to appreciate its importance. Also, I think I’ve got a lot more to offer working in theatre than what I could offer working as, say, a dentist... I’d make a horrible dentist.

What do you love about the city you live in?
Brisbane is homely. It’s not so big that it overshadows the people, but it’s big enough to make grand things happen.

Where did you go for your last holiday?
I travelled around Europe for 3 months with my partner, Kristen. That was earlier this year, so I’m still in a bit of a recovery process. I think I might have left a part of me over there.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
I have a pair of forbidden jeans. They’re tighter-than-skin-tight, bright blue with a tartan print, and they make me feel like a sassy superhero. Unfortunately my closest friends and loved ones have forbidden me from ever wearing them, so they’ve never been seen outside of the house. I’m waiting for a special day, when nobody’s expecting it, and when there’s crime to be sassed…

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
Friends. I still watch them every time I’m sick in bed. They comfort me. Chandler is my spirit animal.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I’m more of a sci-fi nerd than a history buff, so I’d probably try to warp the system – travel back five minutes and meet myself… that sort of chaos.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
Look, I’d have to be honest with you. I’d order takeout. Nice takeout, like some gourmet pizza or a Mexican banquet. But probably best not to cook. We all have a limit to our skill sets…

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
“You are what you love, not what loves you” –Charlie Kaufman.
Your passion is its own reward. Don’t expect it to pay off in some other way, to be passionate is a feat worth celebrating. Ambition can be the killer of passion…

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I downloaded an app for a 30-day ab workout. I’ve never since opened it. Will probably never use it. It just sits there staring at me, reminding me of my unmotivated attitude towards fitness.

Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Not at all. This is my biggest weakness. I haven’t found that balance. Don’t even know where to start!

How do you define success?
It’s a construct, a motivational tool. The definition is always changing, so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

What's your spirit animal?
Chandler Muriel Bing. I totally said that one already...
