Mitch McIlwain – scenestr of the day

Mitch McIlwain
What do you do?
Monday to Friday I work for my family’s civil engineering firm. Out of these hours I work on property developments with my old man and then organise the Brisbane-based events The Winter Social and Sunset Affair, which I created over two years ago now. We are looking at holding more events this year too!

Why do you do it?
I like to stay busy, it keeps my mind active! I have always loved partying and enjoying myself, so events are something that really appeal to me.

What do you love about the city you live in?
You can’t beat Brissie's weather! It’s really coming alive lately and each week there are more and more new bars and restaurants opening – I feel like we are really putting ourselves on the map. I also love that it's only 50 minutes from some of the best beaches in the world!

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Last July some mates and I went to Europe for a month and had a blast! The Euro summer is hard to beat with the partying that goes on in places like the Greek Islands, Portugal and Croatia!

What’s your favourite item of clothing and why?
I think it would be a pair of chinos that I wear religiously! They go with just about anything!

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
'The Simpsons' would have to be up there. Still to this day I can turn it on at any time during any episode and watch it for hours!

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
It would have been pretty cool to watch Neil Armstrong take his first steps on the moon!

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
My cousin gave me a pizza stone for Christmas last year and lately my housemates and I have been obsessed with making our own pizzas from scratch. It works well when you have people over as a good way of getting everyone involved too. And perfect with a few beers!

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
'You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take' - Wayne Gretzky. I don’t like missing out on things and I don’t want to lie on my death bed one day and look back and say: “I wish I had done that”; so I like to try and take every opportunity that gets thrown my way.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I’m a bit of a fire bug! When I was younger my cousin and I accidentally lit one side of our Nan's house on fire, haha. The right handside of the house needed to be repainted and Telstra had to come out and repair the melted cables running up the side! My cousin ended up with third-degree burns to his hands and had to go to hospital in an ambulance! It was on Christmas Day too, so it didn’t go down too well with our parents!

Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
I am, but my ultimate goal is to work for myself so I get more freedom and I am working towards this every day. Sometimes it can get to your head when you have big days at work, but it’s all part of it I guess.

How do you define success?
I think the key to success is happiness. Like people often say: 'If you love what you do, then you won’t have to work a day in your life'. I couldn’t agree more with this statement. Success is definitely not how much money someone makes – you can be the richest man in the world and still be miserable. If you can go to sleep at the end of the day and be happy with the way you’re living your life and feel you are giving everything a go then I think you can say you are pretty successful.

What's your spirit animal?
Haha! God knows. Although I guess it would be sick to be something like an eagle so I could fly whenever and wherever I want and keep an eye on things from high above.
