I’m an actor. I wrote a one-man show called Welcome To Thonnet, which I’ll be performing for Brisbane Festival at Metro Arts from September 10-14.
Why do you do it?
I’d always wanted to write something for myself to act in. I originally wanted to make a show with some friends, but they all said no, so I was forced to make it by myself.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I like going on aimless walks by myself at odd hours and Melbourne is a wonderful city to wander through.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Thailand. My partner and I went with my old acting teacher and his family to the Thai-Burma border to make theatre with refugees in Ma La camp. We did a version of Pericles with them. It was an incredible experience. Very sad to think they’re still stuck in there.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
Probably the three-piece suit I inherited from my great uncle Otto. It’s the one thing that saves me from looking like a hobo (though I may just look like a hobo who’s stolen a suit).
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
Blackadder.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I’d love to meet Shakespeare and see how his plays were originally performed.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
I’d pretend I wasn’t home and sit in the dark watching you through the front window while eating a bowl of cereal.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Never buy anything from a supermarket that is supposed to be made with egg but they’ve substituted it with something else. I made this mistake once with mayonnaise and once with a Carbonara sauce. I will never do it again. It was utterly repulsive.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
Once, when I was 21, I decided to tweezer the hairs off my face rather than shave. It was painful, took forever and turned my face red.
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
There’s no consistency for most actors; there are floods and droughts and everything in between. It can be very worrisome at times, but it’s nice to have a horizon of possibilities.
How do you define success?
Success is when you achieve what you set out to do, I suppose. It’s not always the most important thing in life.
What's your spirit animal?
I wasn’t sure what a spirit animal was so I looked it up on Urban Dictionary and a little further along I found this entry: Spirit Boner. Literally getting so excited for a college sports event that you become sexually aroused. Eg. "When the Bruins won that game on a last minute 3-pointer, I had a raging spirit boner!"
Can I have a Spirit Boner instead of a Spirit Animal?
