Kevin Silvester - scenestr of the day

What do you do? My name is Kevin Silvester and I'm a singer-songwriter, music producer, die-hard Taylor Swift fan, former child, skincare addict, sushi lover and air breather from Melbourne, Australia. Air breather above all.

Why do you do it? I can't imagine what my life would be without music. I've always thought that if I were in another profession, I would be thinking about being a musician all day everyday, so I might as well just actually be one.

What do you love about the city you live in? I love how diverse and accepting Melbourne has become. As a queer and Asian artist trying to make it in the music industry, it is important that there is an audience who embraces and supports you. Also there's a really great Gozleme food truck in the city. Shoutout to Mamas Gozleme.

Where did you go for your last holiday? I went to Fiji for my last holiday and it's become my favourite place on Earth. The people are incredibly nice and they invited us to immerse in their culture. It had such a welcoming and open atmosphere, and it just felt like the happiest place on Earth.

What's your favourite item of clothing? I love collecting random accessories, especially from thrifting. I think accessories really complete a look and establish the vibe that you're trying to evoke from the outfit. My favourite one is a necklace that's literally a mini knife and fork on a chain. It's so random but it's so cute. I wear it all the time.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? I loved 'In The Night Garden'. The whole world they've created is so whimsical and surreal. It feels like an LSD trip watching as an adult, but as a child I think it really nurtured my wild imagination. Also Makka Pakka is just so cute.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go? I would go back to when Taylor Swift performed in Melbourne for the Reputation Tour.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? I can make a killer pesto tuna pasta bake. It's one of my most prized skills. My friend once asked me to make him that as his birthday gift. That's how good it is. I'm also really good at cooking hard boiled eggs and two-minute noodles, in which I believe I can make in less than two minutes.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned? Never do business with friends. . . Just don't.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows... I've got a boating license and it comes in handy after my murders. . . kidding! I think no one expects me to unironically listen to metal, but I'm a huge metal fan. I listen to Slipknot to fall asleep sometimes.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance? For me, my work is my life, and I'm happy with that. I don't think I could ever separate music from my personal life because it's my core passion, and nothing will ever take music away from me.

How do you define success? Success for me right now is being able to sustain a music career to a point where I have an audience that really connects with my music. The connection with my audience is something that's really important to me and something that I'll always cherish.

What's your spirit animal? According to a BuzzFeed quiz, my spirit animal is the owl. I guess that's true – I like solitude, and I'm also a night-owl.
