I run Dinosaur City Records, an independent record label home to some of Australia's most exciting new artists including Skydeck, Solo Career, Pillow Pro, Punko, Elmo Aoyama, Deuce, NOCON and Nick Griffith. I also freelance as a graphic designer and art director.
Why do you do it?
I started running the label back in 2017 as a way to support artists (mostly friends, to begin with), who were writing, recording and performing great music, but lacked the support or confidence to put it out.
At the time I was working full-time at an advertising agency, and found running the label to be a fulfilling side project/ hobby. Over the past couple of years, running the label has become a priority, and design has become more of a side gig (for the most part). There is just too much good music I can't turn down. . . though I also can't turn down design jobs because that's how I make an income.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I moved to Naarm/ Melbourne at the beginning of April this year. There are so many beautiful walks, including the Yarra Trail, Merri Creek Trail and Darebin Parklands, where you can be amongst nature and feel like you're far from the city, while still being conveniently close. I also love the music that comes out of Naarm – so many of my favourite bands originate from here. Plus, there is a lot of good food.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
I got my drivers licence in February and bought a van. I drove out to North-West New South Wales (last stop Lightning Ridge) with my dog a week or so later. It was so much fun. I love the outback, driving and hanging out with my dog.
What's your favourite item of clothing?
I've been living in the night shirt/ pants from local brand, Suku Home. It is the perfect lockdown 'fit – super comfy, but I don't feel like I'm living in my pyjamas, even though I kind of am.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
I was obsessed with 'Enchanted Lands: The Magic Of The Faraway Tree' (as well as the books), the S Club 7 TV Series and 'H.R. Pufnstuf'.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would probably just go back to a time when we could travel overseas. There are so many places I'd like to go again, but right now I am dreaming about snorkelling in Amed.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Probably Ottolenghi's Eggplant Dumplings alla Parmigiani with some greens on the side. It's so yummy.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Trust and believe in yourself.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
Selena Gomez was my most listened to artist in 2020 :-)
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
Not completely. I'm essentially running two businesses – a record label and a design studio, and often I'll be working from 9am 'til 10pm, juggling both. I am getting better at saying 'no' more, and making sure I also prioritise myself and my health. I'm getting there.
How do you define success?
If I'm doing my best, I'd say that's 'success'.
What's your spirit animal?
Maybe my dog, Pepito.
