I write, direct and produce in film and theatre. I’m the Co-Writer and Director of ‘Katele’ (Mudskipper), playing as part of Flickerfest in 2023.
Why do you do it?
I’ve always been interested in people’s stories and our diverse experiences in this world.
What do you love about the city you live in?
There’s so much to love about living on Kabi Kabi country on the Sunshine Coast – the bush, the beach, the mountains – salt water, fresh water – family and friends. There’s a special energy here.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Minjerribah – North Stradbroke Island.
What's your favourite item of clothing?
I have these really daggy sandals that I bought for walking on the mangrove mudflats on Saibai Island when we were filming ‘Katale’ (Mudskipper). I rarely wear them in public but as soon as I get home – they’re on!
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
As a little one – ‘Sesame Street’.
As a big little one – ‘The Goodies’.
As an angsty teenager – ‘Degrassi Junior High’ – late 80s/90s series. And ‘The Wonder Years’.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I’d go to see Prince And The Revolution in Brisbane when they toured in the early ‘90s.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
Fish on the fire and rice and maybe some garlic prawns and a salad on the side.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
I’ve listened to Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’ so many times, but only in more recent times have begun to fully understand the lyrics “emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds”.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I still listen to my old mixtapes from time to time.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
At the moment I am, but it ebbs and flows.
How do you define success?
Quality time with the family and either starting or finishing the day in the ocean.
What's your spirit animal?
My totems from Saibai Island are the cassowary (Samu clan) and crocodile (Ait Koedel clan).
