I've been a Merlo barista for one and a half years.
Why do you do it?
I grew up in the Costa Rican countryside. My dad is a coffee farmer, so I’ve always worked with coffee and have always loved coffee. It’s so important to families and young people growing up in my country.
What do you love about the city you live in?
So many cities are the same. Brisbane is beautiful and different, because you have all the convenience of the city with the bush and the beach just a short drive away. I love spending time on the beach.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
Costa Rica, to see my family.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
My Figueres shoes. They’re a very old fashioned type of shoe that are very comfortable. I don’t wear them all the time, but when I’m walking in Costa Rica people always comment on how good my shoes are. I have had my current pair for about five years.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
MacGyver! He could make gadgets out of anything. My siblings and I would try to simulate what he did on TV and fight over who would be MacGyver when we played.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
1890s London. I love the old fashioned era and the culture. Everyone is so polite. It would be an interesting contrast to life today.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
I would make Gallo Pinto, which is a traditional Costa Rican dish made with eggs, rice and black beans flavoured with a special sauce, Salsa Lizano, and some coriander. We eat it mainly for breakfast. It’s very hearty.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
If you really want something, don’t expect it to come for free. You must work hard to achieve the things you are passionate about.
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Yes. I love coffee.
How do you define success?
To me, success is synonymous with happiness. Therefore Happiness = success, not money.
What's your spirit animal?
A jaguar. They’re very patient, elusive creatures.
