I’m the Editor of AskMen. We’re on online men’s lifestyle magazine, and we’re all about publishing advice to help men become better men, whether it’s in the areas of health and fitness, career, relationships, fashion and everything in between. We also have a lot of fun on the site. It’s definitely not all serious stuff!
Why do you do it?
I get to indulge all of my passions with this gig -- writing, sport, travel, movies, music. Most people have their jobs and only indulge their passions on the weekend. I get to indulge mine all week and call it “work”. Why wouldn’t I do it?
What do you love about the city you live in?
I love the variety of bars and restaurants — there’s always somewhere new popping up to go and try. The beaches are also hard to go past. Not just the big ones like Bondi and Manly, but also the less celebrated (but equally awesome) ones, like Tamarama.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
I went skiing in Canada, both at Whistler in British Columbia and Banff in Alberta. It was great. The only thing missing from Sydney is a conveniently located ski-field! And maybe a good sports bar. Canadians do sports bars right. Great beer, atmosphere and those chicken wings, man. A good sports bar is hard to come by in this town.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
Right now it’s this t-shirt my girlfriend got me for my birthday. It says “If you hear any noise, it’s just me and the boys boppin’” on it. It’s a long story, but it’s basically a classic funk music homage and a classic baseball homage all rolled in to one, so it references two of my favourite things. I’ve also been told it’s quite a flattering cut, so what’s not to love?
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
I went crazy for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I was a kid. Michaelangelo was my favourite.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I never really moved on from the ‘90s in terms of my musical tastes, so I’d probably go back and see a concert of one of my favourite bands back in their heyday. I’d go back to the 24-hour period in 1994 in which Metallica, Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers all performed at Woodstock. Technically it was over two different days, but you can bend the rules, right?
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
I don’t get too flashy in the kitchen, but one dish that I cook all the time and constantly experiment with and try to improve is my chili con carne. It’s not too far removed, I guess, but I can also do a passable Spaghetti Bolognese. You’d get one of the two!
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
I’m not a religious guy, but I think there’s a great lesson in the prayer that goes “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference”. I think that’s an awesome way to approach life and adopting that attitude has always stood me in good stead.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I once cried during an episode of Maury Povich… Long story.
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Totally. I wouldn’t do my job if I wasn’t. A lot of people overlook the importance of work/life balance when picking a career, but I think it should be the number one priority.
How do you define success?
If you can do something you love and live comfortably while doing it, you’re a success in my book.
What's your spirit animal?
Haha. A dolphin. Do a lot of people say dolphin? Probably. I’m also a massive dog lover too, so maybe a dog? Sorry, that’s kind of boring too! Haha.
