India Wallis - scenestr of the day

What do you do? I'm the head of Starving Kids Records, a Brisbane-based label and platform (YouTube channel, podcast, blog, PR) that showcases some of the country's best up and coming young artists. I'm also a touring musician, editor of a Melbourne-based podcast, and practising to make my photography more than a hobby.

Why do you do it? I live and breathe music. If I'm not making or performing it myself, I want to be sharing other's music with the world. There are so many amazing musicians that aren't getting the recognition they deserve, if I can help them be seen or heard, I'll do it. Starving Kids is a multifaceted platform that can assist young artists in many different ways. I'm so grateful to be part of the Starving Kids team.

What do you love about the city you live in? Brisbane's music scene is so great. It may be a small city, but the noise it makes is loud! I love that it can feel like a big country town in the way the communities come together to support each other.

Where did you go for your last holiday? I went to Germany in June with my partner, Tom, to go to Download Festival. It was amazing going overseas again and seeing the music industry around the world blossom again after the impact it faced over the last few years.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Currently, it's my Frankie's Pizza By The Slice t-shirt. They're days away from closing their doors and I've had such awesome memories of that bar through gigging there myself, and just being a customer.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? 'SpongeBob Squarepants' is the only one that comes to mind. I still enjoy it when it comes on.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go? I'd either go to LA in the '70s/ '80s, or London in the 1960s to see the live music and fashion.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? It would definitely be an Italian dish. I can confidently cook pasta, so that would be part of it. Or a vegetarian Thai – I'm getting pretty good at that.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned? 'Seasons, reasons and lifetimes' – sometimes people come into your life for a season, some people come into your life for a reason, and others come into your life forever.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows... I have no guilty pleasure music anymore. If I like the song or genre, I'll say so with no embarrassment.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance? Absolutely. I remind myself every day how lucky I am that I can choose the days and the locations that I work from. When I was a young musician working in hospitality, I used to dream about this work/ life balance.

How do you define success? Success to me is being able to get up each morning and fill your day with things that inspire you, drive you, and make a positive difference in someone's day. I also define it as proof that 'hard work pays off'.

What's your spirit animal? I'm a Leo, so I always feel like I should say lion. But these days I relate more to a racoon or another fluffy nocturnal animal like them as I'm usually out and about at night.
