I make things, statements, sacrifices and messes, all in the name of art.
Why do you do it?
Because I have to. It's my life's mojo.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
New Zealand. Some places are so beautiful they make you cry in wonderment.
What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
A big scarf. You can wrap it, snuggle it, use it as a towel, wear it as a skirt, whip it, escape out of a burning building by tying a bunch of them together, etc…
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
I didn't watch much tele. I played in the street with the other kids who also didn't watch much tele. Chuck it, I say! Unless Game Of Thrones is on, in which case don't chuck it.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would go back to about fifteen minutes ago and say, "No, Van! Don't eat that chocolate bar because you're going to get a tummy ache and regret it". Then I would kung-fu the shit out of that chocolate bar.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
Are you a vegetarian? Do you have gluten intolerance? Are you on a special diet? Are you allergic to anything? I can't work under these conditions with so little information! If I were going to cook for you, I need to know more about you so that I can make you something delicious and tailored just for you.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
Take responsibility for your own life.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I do a mean impersonation of Elvis as a fish.
Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Never. Dissatisfaction is the driving force behind my creativity.
How do you define success?
Being able to make great art, having all the resources I need at my disposal including time, materials, support and a receptive audience.
What's your spirit animal?
Double-headed snake crossed with a chihuahua.
