Dwayne Charrington - scenestr of the day

What do you do?
I’m a HTML whisperer AKA a web developer at Josephmark.

Why do you do it?
I can't think of anything else I would enjoy more than making websites.

What do you love about the city you live in?
The fact Brisbane is quietly climbing the ranks of the creative ladder really fast. There’s a lot of amazing things in the creative space coming out of Brisbane, especially in the last couple of years.

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Bali. It was their summer, so it was really hot – it was like going to the gym 24/7.  Even though I was eating the whole time, which as far as I’m aware, you don't do when you go to a gym. Everyone was very friendly, did I mention how much food I ate there? Whoa.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
A plain grey t-shirt I refuse to throw out. It's faded and the material is thinning out, but I love it. It'll be a sad day when I can't wear it anymore.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
I was a kid for a good 12 years or so, so I had a few favourites. Johnson and Friends, Power Rangers and that awkward show, Round The Twist (the one shot in a lighthouse). I wonder what Bronson is up to these days?

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would travel back to the Jurassic and hang out with some T-rexes and other dangerously carnivorous animals.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
In all honesty, I’m new to this whole cooking thing, so I’d probably go and buy a couple of pizzas, take them out of the box and put them into the oven.  And right as you arrive, I'll invite you straight into the kitchen and pull the pizzas out of the oven. You'll remark how great my pizzas are, I'll tell you how I used a secret family recipe and the discussion will get really awkward when you notice the empty pizza boxes near the bin.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
If something says, "caution hot", there’s a good chance it’s probably really hot and could pose a burn risk to you or others around you if improperly handled. A lesson I learned when I was 14 and made some toffee; I had a brain lapse and spooned some of the hot molten sugar mixture right off the stove. It was really painful and delicious, but mostly painful.

Are you happy with your work/life balance?
Josephmark doesn't really feel like work. It’s more like hanging out with friends and creating meaningful projects. Definitely a happy balance though.

How do you define success?
I think success means something different to each person you'll meet. To me, success isn't a money thing —  it's a happiness thing. If you can wake up in the morning and truly be happy with how your life is at that particular point in time, I think that's success. And even then, there are different levels of success and success within success, and then it just gets confusing; a sort-of successception scenario if you think too hard.

What's your spirit animal?
Good question. I've never really given it much thought but I’m going to lock in drop bear. An unsuspecting animal that’s always conveniently located on a tree branch as tourists walk below.
