Doug Hatch – scenestr of the day

What do you do?
By day I am a mild mannered Marketing Officer, but at night I’m a closet actor and creator, acting in independent movies like 'Australiens' for ArtSpear Entertainment, and creating videos and sketches for the Youtube channel 'Guns and Gonads'.  Oh and sometimes I claim to be Batman.

Why do you do it?
Mostly for the attention… oh you weren’t asking about the Batman thing were you?
Marketing is an occupation that gives me enough creative freedom to stop me from going stir crazy while providing some much needed stability. It also allows me to pursue my interest in acting and filming without having to eat Ramen noodles every day. Acting is a passion of mine, and allows me to meet great people and be part of a collaborative team. Working with Joe and Rita from Artspear Entertainment on 'Australiens' was one of the greatest experiences of my life and has really pushed me into wanting to pursue acting full-time.

What do you love about the city you live in?
I love the variety of choice. I never feel like there is nothing to do, and a single weekend can bounce from swimming at the beach, to hiking in the rainforest, or reading a book and having a snooze at the broadwater, finally ending up with a Sunday session at the local bar. There is always something new to try next weekend.

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Not including visiting family, I would say the last holiday I had was when I went to Japan in 2009... Five years ago, that’s slightly depressing isn’t it? I think it’s time to start planning. Possibly somewhere with very little to do but sip expensive cocktails with the word “sex” in the name and read a suitcase full of books while lazing in a banana chair on an abandoned beach…… (le sigh).

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
I love nerdy t-shirts. My closet is about 70% t-shirts with Firefly, Marvel, 'Buffy' and 'Doctor Who' references on them (to name a few). My favourite has an image of 'Alice In Wonderland' falling down the rabbit hole. But the TARDIS from 'Doctor Who' is hovering nearby and the Doctor is reaching out his hand. Incredibly nerdy but incredibly fun as well.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
Everything I owned as a kid was plastered with 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
I think I would order out and pretend that I cooked for you... you know, because I’m lazy. I actually make a great potato bake, so I could pair that with a nice steak and vegetables. Simple yet tasty.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
The best lesson I have learned is to be comfortable in your own skin. There is only one person in the entire world like you. Don’t try to be someone else.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I’m not actually Batman.

Are you happy with your work/life balance?
I definitely work to live. If I could pursue acting and film making full-time then that would be my perfect balance.

How do you define success?
If you are happy with your life, and are able to share it with great people, while also lending a hand to those in need. I think more people should define their success on how happy they are rather than how much money they earn. You can be rich and miserable or poor and happy. I think I’d prefer the latter.

What's your spirit animal?
Nathan Fillion is my spirit animal.
