Cara Westworth - scenestr of the day

What do you do?
I am a nail tech/artist for my own little venture called Kawaii Klaws. I also have a hobby business of making hair bows and accessories called Ruby Kawaii (Kawaii, the Japanese word for cute, is obviously one of my favourite words).

Why do you do it?
I started making hair bows with my mum because I couldn't find anyone in Australia who was making the kind of bows and accessories I like to wear so we decided to make them ourselves. As for nails, I was feeling incredibly unfulfilled in my admin job and knew I was long overdue to get into something creative and inspiring. I've always given myself nail art so I figured I should make it my profession!

What do you love about the city you live in?
Brisbane is great, it's changing in so many amazing ways so it's no longer the sleepy little city people think it is. There are cool little bars, cafes, craft breweries and shops opening everywhere and there's always something to do. Plus our climate is usually pretty good!

Where did you go for your last holiday?
Thailand last year for a wedding. Before that was the USA. Then I'm going to Japan in May. I really love travelling.

What's your favourite item of clothing? Why?
I can't pick just one so I will say my favourite brand is Black Milk Clothing. I wear their skater dresses and leggings almost exclusively. I love the fact a local company who produces everything ethically also makes cool stuff with all my favourite nerdy things on them!

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
There are too many to pick! 'The Simpsons' is an enduring one but I think my favourite would have been 'Animaniacs' of 'Tiny Toons'.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would go to September 4th 1921 and stop Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle from going to San Francisco and thus saving his career from that dreadful scandal. Then I would hang out with him and Buster Keaton and make lots of amazing silent movies with them!

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook for us?
I am an abysmal cook, unfortunately. Probably a vegie spag bog because I can usually do one of them up alright.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
To believe in myself more and surround myself with positive people.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
I love dancing! I've tried my hand at ballet, tap dancing, irish dancing and a little bit of hip hop. I really need to commit to one of them!

Are you happy with your work/life balance?
It's been a bit hectic since I still have an office job by day but once I am doing nails full-time I think things will balance out nicely.

How do you define success?
I used to think success was measured in how much money you make. I've since learned that it's about loving what you do and being proud of your accomplishments. Making good money from it is just a nice little perk.

What's your spirit animal?
I'd prefer to say patronus for cultural appropriation reasons but I think mine would be a poodle. I love dogs and am a little bit fancy so I think poodles represent me well.
