Since I was a child I have had a passion for food and cooking. This is the only career that I have ever wanted to do.
Why do you do it?
Working with exotic and unusual produce to create inventive dishes really inspires me. At Pony Dining I’m the only woman in a kitchen with 12 men. They always make me feel like one of the team. It’s like having 12 big brothers looking out for me.
What do you love about the city you live in?
I really love the laidback vibe of Brisbane; it is very different from Sydney and Melbourne. The community feel of Brisbane is one-of-a-kind.
Where did you go for your last holiday?
I recently went back to South Africa to visit family. I was lucky enough during this visit to see an albino lion which was a highlight of the trip. I also had the rare opportunity to be able to touch a cheetah; this was an amazing experience.
What's your favourite item of clothing?
I am obsessed with beanies. I wear these all year round even in the Queensland heat. From the first time I tried one on, I was hooked.
What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid?
‘The Simpsons’ have always been a favourite of mine since my childhood. I even watched all 25 seasons back-to-back with my partner (it took just over three months). I love that Simpsons’ quotes can be used in everyday life.
If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go?
I would love to go back to 1969 and be a part of Woodstock. I am a 1960s hippie at heart.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us?
When I am at home, I like to keep it simple. I would cook you my famous spicy nachos; it never fails to impress.
What's the best lesson you've ever learned?
My mother always taught me to be humble; this has been a great, life lesson.
Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows...
This is not something that I usually talk about, but I am afraid of being underground. You will never find me going into any cave, as this would freak me out. Although being in enclosed spaces is not a problem.
Are you happy with your work/ life balance?
Not really. I spend up to 60 hours a week at work, so when I get a chance to party I always go hard. You never know when you will get the next opportunity.
How do you define success?
For me success is about being happy in both my personal and work life. This is something that I aim for, to look on the bright side of things.
What's your spirit animal?
My spirit animal would be a lioness. Being able to go out into the world, successfully meet the challenges of life and bring home the bounty for yourself and your loved ones.
