Al Wheeler - scenestr of the day

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.
What do you do? I own and manage Banshees Bar & Artspace in Ipswich. I book bands and work the bar.

Why do you do it? Why does anyone work in the arts? For the love of culture and community. We provide an alternative space for people who don't fit into our otherwise pretty conservative city. I want people to know there's somewhere awesome they can go close to home, without having to travel to Brisbane.

What do you love about the city you live in? I love the community of artists, punks and legends who keep making cool stuff happen out in Ipswich. It's always full of surprises!

Where did you go for your last holiday? My partner and I went to Mount Tamborine and hung around on the coast a bit doing touristy stuff that I'd never done before.

What's your favourite item of clothing? I have a leather jacket that I nabbed from my Mum's donation pile back in 2005. I was 15, it's a knee-length black leather jacket that Mum bought in the '70s from an op shop in London, so obviously I kept it. I've got so many photos of me wearing it in different inappropriate places: festivals in the middle of summer, a Zombie Walk, sweaty moshpits, it's just the best.

What was your favourite TV show when you were a kid? 'Captain Planet'. The fire guy, Wheeler, shares my name and I thought that was awesome.

If you could travel back in time for a day, where would you go? The Library of Alexandria. Give me all of those lost texts.

If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Quiche! I have chickens and a veggie garden and I love cooking from homegrown food.

What's the best lesson you've ever learned? How to be patient with people who are still learning, and give them space to grow.

Tell us one thing about yourself that nobody else knows... I wish I'd stuck with the piano lessons I got when I was a kid.

Are you happy with your work/ life balance? Yeah! People tell me I shouldn't be, but honestly my job is so fun it doesn't feel like work half the time.

How do you define success? Success is full of surprises. Being able to look at yourself and say "I'm doing something good," is pretty great. But also, just keeping on doing things you love is success in itself.
